The earthquake was felt in 14 out of 21 municipalities on the Canary Island, and seismologists call it the strongest in the last 60 years.
Itahiza Dominguez, director of the National Geographic Institute for the Canary Islands, told the media that it was the strongest earthquake recorded on Gran Canaria in at least 60 years.
Its epicenter was Santa Maria de Guia in the north of the island, although later reports described it as being about 13 miles off its northwest coast.
The earthquake is believed to have occurred at a depth of 12.5 miles below the earth’s surface.
But there were no immediate reports of any casualties or structural damage.
Tuesday’s quake was initially recorded as magnitude 4.1, before it was revised down.
However, aftershocks are not excluded.
A spokesman for the emergency coordination center run by the regional government confirmed: “An earthquake was recorded on the north coast of Gran Canaria and was felt in 14 of the island’s 21 municipalities.
“Several 999 calls have been received. There are no reports of any casualties or major incidents at this time.”
