Prafulla Chakki

Prafulla Chaki was a revolutionary freedom fighter. He was part of the Jugantar group and its revolutionary activities. Assassination of influential British officials was the main agenda of the Jugantar group. He is famous for organizing the killing of Judge Kingsford and his companion Khudiram Bose by throwing bombs on their carriage. However, the plan unexpectedly fails when the carriage they drop the bomb on does not carry Mr. Kingsford. In this attack, two English women riding in Kingsford’s carriage were killed. On May 1, 1908, a British policeman attempted to arrest Prafulla Chaki and he committed suicide. Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose are accused of killing two British women. Soon after Prafulla Chakki’s suicide and Khudiram Bose’s arrest, during a freedom struggle movement, Mahatma Gandhi declared that violent methods would never bring independence to India, and he expressed his disapproval of Prafulla Chakki ·Chucky’s suicide is regrettable. However, the great Indian revolutionary freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak praised Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose’s killing attempt in his Marathi newspaper Kesari and spoke out Opposed British rule in India and demanded Indian independence. Prafulla Chaki was born into a wealthy family in Bihar. His ancestors belonged to a village in Bogra district of Bangladesh. Originally, Bosu was the real surname of Prafulla Chaki’s family. He received his secondary education at his sister-in-law’s house in Rangpur. He started participating in the Indian independence movement in ninth grade and was later expelled from Rangpur Zilla School for participating in student protests against the East Bengal Act. Soon after leaving Rangpur Zilla School, he started studying at Rangpur National School. At Rangpur National School, he met famous Indian freedom fighters such as Jitendranarayan Roy, Abinash Chakravarti, Ishan Chandra Chakravarti, and developed a patriotic tendency.

revolutionary activities

Once, Barindra Kumar Ghosh, one of the founding members of the Jugantar organization, visited his village Rangpur. Prafulla Chaki met him and expressed interest in participating in the revolutionary activities organized by the Jugantar group to overthrow British rule in India. Soon, Barindra Kumar Ghosh brought Prafulla Chaki to Kolkata and registered her name with the Jugantar Group. The assassination of Sir Joseph Bampfield Fuller, the first Lieutenant Governor of East Bengal and Assam, was Prafulla Chachi’s first mission soon after joining the Jugantal Group. For some reason, Prafulla did not complete the task.

Douglas Kingsford’s assassination attempt

Prafulla’s second major responsibility was the assassination of Douglas Kingsford, the magistrate of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. Kingsford was considered a very cruel magistrate in Calcutta who often signed death sentences against Bengali political workers and was hated by the Bengali people. Kingsford was so harsh on the innocent people of Bengal that the revolutionaries plotted to murder him. Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose were responsible for carrying out the assassination. Dinesh Chandra Ray was the pseudonym adopted by Prafulla Chaki during the planning. Before attempting to murder Kingsford, Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose conducted covert surveillance of Kingsford and his activities for many days. They noticed that Kingsford often rode in his carriage at the European Club, and they decided to kill him at the carriage door. On April 30, 1908, Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose were waiting outside the Club de Europe for his carriage to pass by. Soon, as the carriage passed through the gate, they threw a bomb into the carriage. However, they learned on the spot that Kingsford was not traveling in the carriage and the bomb accidentally killed two British women traveling in the carriage. Mr. Pringle Kennedy’s wife and daughter were killed in the explosion. Mr. Pringle Kennedy is the lead advocate at Muzaffarpur Law Firm. Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose fled the scene shortly after two British women died accidentally. The two chose different ways to evade police capture. A railway employee named Triguna Charan Ghosh helped Prafulla Chaki arrange a ticket for him to Mokama.

A British police officer, Nandlal Banerjee, was traveling in the same compartment as Prafulla Chaki on the train to Mokama. The police recognized Prafulla and tried to arrest him. Prafulla Chachi, however, shot himself with his own revolver. In 1971, Arun Chandra Guha published a book titled “The First Spark of Revolution: The Early Phases of India’s Struggle for Independence, 1900-1920” in which he mentioned Prafulla Chaki shot him on the chin. It states,

Bengali policeman Nandalal Banerji was also traveling in the same compartment… Nandalal suspected Prafulla and tried to arrest him. But Prafulla is wary. He put the revolver under his chin and pulled the trigger… This happened on the Mokama Station platform on May 2, 1908. “

Soon after Prafulla Chaki committed suicide, Khudiram Bose was also arrested by the British authorities. According to reports, Nandlal Banerjee cut off Prafulla Chaki’s head from her body. Later, his body was identified by Khudiram Bose, who was arrested and hanged. Two revolutionary freedom fighters Srishh Pal and Ranen Ganguly later killed police officer Nandlal Banerjee in revenge for Prafulla Death of Prafulla Chaki. It was a difficult decision for British authorities to identify Prafulla Chakki’s body as he had adopted the name Dinesh Ray during his assignment with the Jugantar group. British police struggled to identify Prafulla Chakki after he committed suicide. That is why they beheaded him and buried him in the garden of the Intelligence Bureau office on Lord Sinha Road. An IB officer reportedly exhumed his skull to preserve it on La Bazar’s criminal record. After so many years, renowned historian and professor Amalendu De mentioned in his research that Prafulla Chaki’s head was not in the ground where it was buried. He also requested DNA from the skull preserved in La Bazar. But the police always rejected his request.
