At a very young age, Prakash developed a keen interest in badminton as his father often motivated him to focus on the sport. He was a right-handed badminton player who played his first tournament, the Karnataka Junior Championship, in 1962. In 1991, Prakash retired from competitive sports and served for a period as the president of the Badminton Association of India. He also served as the coach of the Indian national badminton team from 1993 to 1996. In 1994, Prakash founded the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) along with Vimal Kumar and Vivek Kumar.
Prakash co-founded the ‘Olympic Gold Quest’ organization in 2001 to promote the Olympic movement in India. Prakash received the BAI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
