Pramod Bhagat is an Indian para-badminton player who competes at the SL3 and SL4 levels. Pramod is a five-time BWF world champion and ranked No. 1 in the world. First place in the SL3 group of disabled badminton men’s singles. In 2021, he represented India at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and won the gold medal for India.

Pramod Bhagat was born on Saturday, June 4, 1988 (age 33 years; as of 2021) in Hajipur village, Vaishali district, Bihar state, India. His zodiac sign is Gemini. After completing his formal education, Pramod attended the Industrial Training Institute, Bhubaneswar, where he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Pramod Bhagat enjoyed playing various sports during his childhood. When he was 4 years old, he started playing badminton with the older boys in the village and became interested in badminton. Over time, Pramod mastered this skill and never lost to anyone. Pramod Bhagat was diagnosed with polio when he was five years old, affecting his left leg. His economic backwardness and leg disability became huge obstacles in his career, but he did not back down and crossed every obstacle on the way forward. At the age of 13, Pramod started playing badminton professionally against players of different abilities at regional and state level tournaments. In 2005, Pramod started participating in national level competitions and won many medals in the sport. In 2006, Pramod Bhagat made his international debut at the FESCPIC Games (now known as the Asian Para Games) under the guidance of coach Shiba Prasad Das. His national team career did not start well and he withdrew from the competition after playing in his first match; however, in the same year, he won his first international medal.
The following year 2007, Pramod participated in the IBAD World Badminton Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand, and won two bronze medals, one each in singles and doubles. Pramod Bhagat won his first international singles gold medal at the 2009 IBAD World Badminton Championships in Seoul, South Korea. In 2013, Pramod Bhagat and his doubles partner Manoj Sarkar participated in the men’s doubles event at the 2013 World Championships in Dortmund, Germany, and defeated the Japanese pair with a score of 21-15, 10 Taku Hiroi and Toshiaki Suenaga won gold medals. –21, 21–18. In 2014, Pramod won a bronze medal at the Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea; the Odisha government subsequently announced a cash reward of Rs 1.2 million for him. In 2015, Pramod Bhagat represented India at the Badminton World Championships with doubles partner Tarun Dhillon; Pramod defeated Vietnam’s Pham Duc Trung to win the gold medal in the men’s singles competition, and won the gold medal in the men’s doubles competition. In the match, he won the silver medal with Tarun Dhillon with a score of 21-7, 14-21, 6-21. Subsequently, he participated in many international events such as the 2017 Thailand International Para Badminton Championships, the 2017 BWF World Championships, the 2018 Dubai International Para Badminton Championships, and the 2018 Australian International Para Badminton Championships, and won multiple medals. One of the career highlights of Pramod Bhagat was the 2018 Asian Para Games. He won a gold medal in the men’s singles SL3 category and a silver medal in the men’s doubles SL3-SL4 category at the Asian Championships. Pramod was highly appreciated across the country for his victory. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also posted a photo with Pramod on his Instagram account to congratulate Pramod on his historic victory.
2019 was a successful year for Pramod Bhagat. He won gold in the singles category, silver in the doubles category and gold in the mixed doubles category at the 2019 IWAS World Games. Pramod also won a total of two gold medals in the SL3 men’s singles and doubles categories. Both participated in the 2019 BWF Para-Badminton World Championships in Basel, Switzerland. Pramod Bhagat won doubles at the 2019 China Para Badminton International, 2019 BWF World Championships, 2019 Ireland International Para Badminton and 2019 Uganda International Para Badminton Crown, the gold medalist in singles and doubles.
For his outstanding performance in 2019, Pramod Bhagat received several awards and cash prizes. Pramod received the OSJA Athlete of the Year Award 2019 along with a cash prize of Rs 25,000. The Otissa state government presented him with a cash gift of Rs. 30. 1 million to achieve international success and make the country proud. He was also named Sportslogon Sportsperson of the Year 2019 and received a cash prize of Rs 25,000.
In 2021, Pramod Bhagat made his Paralympic debut and represented India at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. Pramod won the men’s singles SL3 gold medal and etched his name in the history of Paralympic badminton. He also became the first Indian to win a gold medal in badminton at the Paralympics. After his win, Pramod Bhagat received appreciation and congratulations from across the world.

This is very special to me, this is my dream come true. Bethel definitely put a lot of pressure on me, but I just stayed calm and played to my strengths. I would like to dedicate this document to my parents and all those who have supported me. I am happy to make India proud. “

Arjuna Award
On August 29, 2019, Pramod Bhagat received the Arjuna Award from Indian resident Ram Nath Kovind for his outstanding performance in para-badminton. The Arjuna Award is a sports honor of the Republic of India, awarded to Indian sports figures who have achieved outstanding performance in the field of sports. The Arjuna Award winner will receive a bronze statue of Arjuna, a certificate, a gown and a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh.
Biju Patnaik Odisha Sports Awards
In 2019, Pramod Bhagat was awarded the Odisha Biju Patnaik Sports Award for his outstanding performance in sports and received a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.
Keller Ratner Award
In 2021, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the awarding of the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award to him.
