Pratap Pothen (1952-2022) was an Indian actor, director, screenwriter, producer and filmmaker. He has acted in more than 100 South Indian films. He passed away on July 15, 2022, at his apartment in Chennai due to natural health reasons.

Pratap Pothan was born on Wednesday, August 13, 1952 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala (age 69 at the time of death). He attended Lawrence School in Lovedale, Tamil Nadu.
He received his BA in Economics from Madras Christian College, Chennai, in 1972. He participated in drawing competitions at school. While studying at university, he joined a theater troupe and that’s when he became interested in acting.

His father Kolathinkal Pothan was a businessman. Pratap has five brothers and sisters. His brother’s names are Hari Pothen (filmmaker) and Mohan Pothen. The name of one of his sisters is Devi Pothen.

After graduation, he worked as a copywriter in several advertising agencies including Sistas Advertising Agency and Hindustan Thomson. He started his career as a theater artist. He joined a troupe called Madras Actors and acted in many plays. While he was performing in the stage play Androcles and the Lion, he was discovered by Indian film producer B.B.B. Pratap, who invited Pratap to star in the Malayalam film Aravam (1978). ) plays the role of Kokkarakko.
He appeared in many Malayalam films such as “Thakara” (1979), “Chamaram” (1980), “Sindoora Sandhyakku Mounam” (1982), “Once Upon A Time There Was A Kallan” (2014) and “Forensic” (2020).
He made his debut in Tamil films as Indumathi’s husband in Azhiyadha Kolangal (1979).
He appeared in several Tamil films such as “Ilamai Kolam” (1980), “Kudumbam Oru Kadambam” (1981), “Echchil Iravugal” (1982), “Aayirathil Oruvan” (2010) and “Kamali From Nadukkaveri” ( 2021). Pratap made his Telugu debut as Pratap in the film “Aakali Rajyam” (1981).
His other Telugu films include “Kanchana Ganga” (1984), “Justice Chakravarthy” (1984), “Chukkallo Chandrudu” (2006), “Yevade Subramanyam” (2015) and “Veedevadu” (2017 Year). In 1988, he made his debut as a screenwriter with the Tamil film Solla Thudikuthu Manasu. His first Tamil film as a director was Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai (1985) and nearly two years later he directed his first Malayalam film Rithubhedam (1987). As a writer and director, some of his films include Jeeva (1988), My Dear Marthandan (1990), Magudam (1992), Seevalaperi Pandi (1994) and Lucky Man (1995). Pratap started his advertising agency “Green Apple” and directed television commercials for MRF Tires and Nippo. In 2007, he played the role of KR Menon IAS in the Hindi film Guru. In 2009, he starred in the Kalaignar TV series “Naalaya Iyakkunar”.
