I didn’t expect my moon photo to go viral, but it’s definitely my best photo yet.”
- Prathamesh Jaju has been passionate about space since childhood and is a big fan of the sci-fi movies/TV series Star Trek and Star Wars.
- At the age of 13, Pratamesh joined Jyotirvidya Parisanstha (JVP), India’s oldest amateur astronomy club. JVP is a non-governmental organization that offers courses in astronomy and astrophotography. They also hold stargazing events to help students better understand the sky.
- Before his moon photos went viral, Jaju’s photos of planets like Mars and Jupiter had been reposted by several other astrophotography-related accounts.
- It took Prathamesh four hours to capture this photo of the moon and another three days to shoot and edit it. Jaju uploaded the photo with the caption:
This image is an HDR composite of two different images to give it a three-dimensional effect. This is the most detailed and sharpest image I have taken of a third quarter mineral moon… I took about 50,000+ images, over 186 GB of data, and nearly destroyed my laptop in the processing.”
- In an interview with ANI, he explained the process of taking these photos. In the interview, he said:
I first captured them (the images) by taking multiple videos of different small areas of the Moon. Each video contains about 2000 frames; first we stabilize them, then we merge and stack each video into one picture. So I took about 38 videos. Now we have 38 pictures. ”
- In the interview, Prathamesh further added that he wants to become an astrophysicist and major in astronomy and astrophotography is just a hobby for him.
