‘Pre-Shower Makeup’ Is All Over TikTok Right Now: Here’s What You Need to Know

This is not an exercise: pre-shower makeup is a trend.

The term is currently trending on social media, with the hashtag #preshowermakeup boasting over 3.5 million views on TikTok alone, and videos showing young people embracing their love of creativity when it comes to experimenting with their beauty routines.

One TikTok, which has been viewed more than 1.5 million times, explains the trend simply by having a user write on a Nov. 24 video: “Putting on more makeup right before showering 😻🫶.” In the video, she applies soft and light makeup to her face and finishes with a glossy lip gloss.

People were also quick to jump in with their shared love of experimentation right before the shower, as a way to try something new without the added pressure of leaving the house.

One user wrote that “it’s so much fun to play and experiment” when you’re just about to take your makeup off, and another wrote: “I like to practice, and if it turns out bad, I can wash it off.”

Another video echoed the same idea — and got the same love in the comments — as a girl jokingly reacted to a hypothetical situation where a boy came in, but she had her entire face “made up before the shower” and took a while to take it off before before he arrives.

One user commented that the video “reminded” them to “start putting on make-up again before the shower, such a small thing but it’s always so much fun”, while another wrote: “At some point I stopped wearing make-up stupidly and it makes me sad .”

The comments also offered another definition of the trend, as one person asked what pre-shower makeup was, and the user replied, “It’s when you experiment with makeup or do a silly makeup look because you’re going to wash it off right after with no consequences.”

In another tutorial-style video, a TikTok user named Aimee confessed her makeup skills, “I need to learn — and what’s a better time to do it?” as she tried out two different smoky-eye styles on each of her lids as part of her pre-shower makeup routine.

As the trend has taken over TikTok, some brands are joining the conversation. On Saturday, cosmetics brand Ipsy shared a video of a girl “doing makeup before showering” and captioned it, “Makeup before showering is always disconnected ✨.”

The trend also offers an opportunity to try out new products, new makeup styles, or try out new techniques circulating the internet — all without the added pressure of needing to look perfect for a night out.

As one TikTok user said in the video, pre-shower makeup offers her a chance to wear the bold red lips she’s “too afraid to try during the day.
