Preet Kaur Gill, the first female Sikh MP in Britain, said that she was compelled to call the police after getting a threatening email with the subject line “watch your back.”
Following the email, the senior Labour MP for Birmingham, Edgbaston, said that she is compelled to maintain a bodyguard during her local surgery meetings.
“It was quite blunt. I worry since I spend a lot of time with my girls in the district. There, my family resides. It clearly clarifies the nature of the work you undertake. Even though it’s already difficult, there isn’t much assistance available while you’re dealing with it. I’m genuinely disturbed and concerned about this most recent direct threat, Gill said to GB News on Saturday.
“As a woman, you face people who think it’s okay to say this sort of stuff to you when you put yourself forward, want to address injustices, and care about issues that affect your constituents.” Gill was startled that the threat wasn’t sent under a pseudonym but from a real account with a real email address.
Having previously been the target of hate crimes, Gill stated, “I could not believe that this individual had made that threat using their place of employment email. The incident has been reported by Gill to the West Midlands Police.
In a recent Guardian article, Gill was charged with discrediting sexual assault victims. A group debunking claims of sexual abuse at gurdwaras received a number of WhatsApp messages from the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development.
