Pregnant Calif. Woman Dies After Hit-And-Run Car Accident, Doctors Save Her Baby

A collision between two vehicles in California ended in the tragic death of a 21-year-old pregnant woman, whose child was later delivered by doctors.

The crash happened around 8:42 p.m. Tuesday near the area of ​​Blossom Hill Road and Winfield Boulevard in San Jose, California, according to a media alert from the San Jose Police Department.

The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE that the victim is April Zoglauer of San Jose.

Zoglauer was traveling eastbound in a black 2008 Nissan when he collided with a southbound white 2013 Hyundai.

There were two unknown men in the white limousine who fled the scene on foot immediately after the accident. As announced by the SJPD, during the first investigative actions, it was determined that the white limousine was an unreported stolen vehicle.

SJPD confirmed to PEOPLE that the investigation is ongoing and that no new updates are available at this time.

Zoglauer was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her child was successfully delivered after emergency surgery, but remains in critical condition.

The SJPD reported in its media release that this is the 42nd fatal crash and 43rd traffic fatality of 2023 in San Jose. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, the number of traffic fatalities in the state of California will increase approximately 7.6% from 3,980 in 2020 to 4,285 in 2021.

In April, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released its latest projections of traffic fatalities for 2022, estimating that 42,795 people died in traffic crashes.

“We continue to face a national crisis in traffic fatalities on our roadways, and everyone has a role to play in reversing the increases we’ve experienced in recent years,” US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a news release. “Through our National Road Safety Strategy, we are strengthening road safety across the country and working towards the day when these preventable tragedies are a thing of the past.”
