Political career
Preneet started her political career in 1999 when she contested the general elections from Patiala Lok Sabha constituency. Her party didn’t win the election, but she won seats. At the next election in 2004, the party won and she retained her seat. During her tenure, she served on the Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution Department; Women Empowerment; Public Utilities; and Water Resources Committees. In 2007, Amarinder Singh quit the party and Prineet had to leave the seat. She took office again in 2009 after her party won the election. During this term, she became Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. In 2014, her party lost the election and she had to give up her seat. In 2019, her party won the election and she continued as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. In February 2023, Preneet was suspended from the Congress party for alleged anti-national activities. On March 14, 2024, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
