Pretty Little Liars Cast Forgot Sydney Sweeney Made a Cameo in the Series Finale: ‘Is This True?’

At the Epic Cons Chicago fan convention on Saturday, attended by PEOPLE, Sweet little liars cast members Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Keegan Allen and Torrey DeVitto — who played Hannah Marin, Spencer Hastings, Toby Cavanaugh and Melissa Hastings — were shocked when asked about Sydney Sweeney’s appearance on the Freeform series finale.

“Is that true? Who is she playing?” moderator Arielle Kebbel asked the audience in a fan-recorded clip, before jokingly adding: “She doesn’t have a name. Nobody cared about her then. I have you.”

“I’m in the Twilight Zone,” Devitto (39) responded in shock. “What?”

However, Allen, 34, was still in disbelief, saying: “I’m going to look this up. This is driving me crazy.”

Sweeney played Willa, a high school student who went missing, in the hit series finale in 2017. When fans asked what the purpose of Sweeney’s appearance was, Devitto joked, “Well, they didn’t even know she was on the show.”

“I think it’s probably Marlene [King] setting a generation and when we were done with our show, it wasn’t like it was going to stand out right away,” Bellisario explained. “I guess she just said that, the story goes on.”

After discovering that Sweeney, 26, had indeed appeared in the show, Allen stood up and paced back and forth on stage with his hands on his head.

As she showed his phone to his former co-workers, Bellisario said, “I remember this,” and he commented, “Fuck her.”

He added: “Dude. What is the world, man? Brother, brother.”

When asked if a spinoff series with Sweeney wasn’t accepted, Bellisario clarified, “It’s not that it just wasn’t accepted… We finished our show and there was no other intention to do a spinoff, so it was just kind of like Marlene’s way of being like this would the story could go on, isn’t it fun? It happens all the time.”

Sweet little liars concluded its seventh and final season in June 2017. The hit teen drama premiered in 2010 on ABC Family (now Freeform) and ran for 160 episodes during its run.

The mystery series, directed by I. Marlene King and inspired by Sarah Shepard’s book series of the same name, followed a group of friends stalked by the elusive “A.” While “A” starts contacting them after the disappearance of their friend Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) and they eventually uncover the culprit. However, the four learn over the course of the series that the horrors that haunt them are much deeper than they previously thought.

The series’ popularity spawned multiple Freeform spinoffs, Perfectionists and Ravenswoodas well as a reboot of Max centered around a brand new mystery, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. Original sin premiered on Max in 2022 and is set to return for a second season.

Since it went off the air, several of the original cast members have reconnected at select events, including three of the four Liars — Bellisario, Benson and Lucy Hale, 34 — who spent time together last year.

The three stepped out to attend Every Day Action’s March 2023 casino-themed charity event, where they posed together for a sweet photo.

Bellisario shared the snap on Instagram and captioned it, “a mini reunion for an amazing cause.” In Bellisario’s place, Sweet little liars the creator commented with three red heart emoticons.

Benson also posted a photo from the gala, captioned “My girls 🖤 last night.”
