Prince William Arrives at 2024 BAFTAs as Kate Middleton Continues Recovery from Abdominal Surgery

Prince William arrived at the 2024 BAFTAs on Sunday without his wife Kate Middleton.

The Prince of Wales, 41, walked the red carpet alone at the 77th EE BAFTA Film Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London as the Princess of Wales recovers from abdominal surgery last month.

Prince William, who has been president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts since 2010, wore a navy blue velvet tuxedo jacket with black lapels, teamed with black trousers, a bow tie and a crisp white shirt.

On Friday, Kensington Palace confirmed Prince William’s arrival at the event.

“The Prince, President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), will watch the awards ceremony before meeting the category winners and EE Rising Star Award nominees,” the statement said.

Actress, writer and director Samantha Morton will also be honored with a BAFTA Fellowship. “It is the highest accolade from an arts charity awarded by BAFTA in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television,” BAFTA said in a statement on Tuesday.

Prince William’s appearance at the ceremony comes after he took a week off from royal duties to look after Princess Kate and their three children – Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 – during their baby break. from school.

Prince William’s week off follows a brief return to public duties that were delayed by his wife’s surgery on February 7. The engagement was also William’s first appearance since his father King Charles’ cancer diagnosis was revealed two days earlier.

A friend recently told PEOPLE of William, “He’s coping remarkably well considering his wife had surgery and he only recently learned his father’s news.”

Kensington Palace revealed the news of Princess Kate’s surgery in a statement released on January 17. “The surgery was a success and she is expected to remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery,” the statement read. “Based on current medical advice, he is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”

Prince William and Princess Kate’s appearance at last year’s BAFTA Awards was the first time the couple had attended the ceremony in two years. In 2021, William withdrew from performing at the BAFTAs following the death of his grandfather Prince Philip on 9 April aged 99, while in 2022 it was announced that both William and Kate would not attend the awards due to diary restrictions.

Prince Philip was the first president of the academy.
