Princess Kate is a royal rock star who needs protecting – I know how her team could have stopped the crazy conspiracies

“THEY say that video is not Kate,” read the text of my very intelligent, media-savvy friend from America. “Is she dead? Be honest!”

I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or bang my head against the concrete wall.

Not least because this is just one of literally dozens of similar messages I’ve received from friends around the world over the past few weeks as the Princess of Wales conspiracy theory chaos has reached its peak.

I’ve had major pop stars demanding to know if the theories are true, seasoned political figures fawning over me at parties and whispering completely insane royal rumors, and my family WhatsApp group chat exploding with such fevered, striking claims that I’m just surprised I’m sorry my phone didn’t turn on.

“No, she’s not dead,” I replied to my American friend, “and yes, that’s her in the video.”

But these two final, irrefutably factual statements did nothing to ease my friend’s concerns.

And at that moment I realized that nothing would, except for Kate to appear on Piers Morgan Uncensored holding a verifiable DNA test result to prove that she is who she says she is. (For the record, madam, as your humble and obedient servant, I am available to perform such selfless duty to my country…)

Kate is a crown jewel that must be protected

Even then, I’m afraid my friend wouldn’t be convinced, and social media would erupt with a collective howl of “LIARS!”

But as strange as this global outbreak of madness is, it also confirms what I’ve been thinking for a while: Kate Middleton is now the biggest star in the royal family and has become a crown jewel that must be protected at all costs.

I haven’t seen this level of hysteria since Princess Diana was alive, and we all know how it ended tragically.

A new YouGov/Sky News poll shows that Kate is the most trusted royal and is so far ahead of the increasingly unpopular Meghan and Harry that the Sussexes would need a telescope to see how far down the trust scale she is.

And it’s not hard to see why; she is the epitome of the perfect princess, who hardly makes a mistake and carries out her public duties with extraordinary poise, elegance and grace.

The survey pointed out that women especially love it and that is why this latest crisis hit them so hard; Kate’s army of fans are genuinely very worried about their favorite royal, desperate for details about how she is doing, and have become increasingly sensitive to all the conspiracy nonsense when those details weren’t available.

Palace made the problem worse

While two-thirds of Britons think the royals have struck a balance in releasing information regarding King Charles’ illness, far fewer said the same about Kate’s, and a third of those polled don’t think the palace has disclosed enough.

I understand the princess’s desire to keep her health problem a secret, as any woman would, and her strong husband’s even greater desire to keep the media from finding out, but by not saying anything, they made the scrutiny and rumor-mongering a million times worse.

As with the Mother’s Day edited photo fiasco, transparency in this modern era of unregulated social media platforms like X will always be better than suppression.

The good old days of “never complain, never explain” worked when there was no social media. It won’t work now, as we’ve seen.

If I were working in those palace press offices, my constant mantra to the royal family would be this: publish the right news to stop the spread of fake news or reap the unfortunate consequences.

To those who say, “but they have a right to their privacy!”, I would simply say this: Of course they do, but being a senior working member of the royal family is a public job paid for by taxpayers’ money.

It brings great privileges – palaces, servants, trifles and flattery.

But it also brings with it great responsibility and accountability.

The attitude of the media has changed

It is important to note that since Diana died, the royals have enjoyed a much improved level of privacy.

Even her brother Earl Spencer, who addressed the media at her funeral, suggested this during an interview for his new book.

It may not seem like it, but it’s a lot easier to be royal these days.

The British media generally no longer take or publish intrusive photos or videos of them, and the current royal children are considered completely off-limits, in a way that their predecessors never were.

When the paparazzi picture of Kate in her mum’s car on the school run was published in America two weeks ago, no one in Britain seized on it.

But recent events have shown that the media/royal game has changed irreversibly, and the palace needs to change with it.

All these crazy conspiracies could have been avoided if they had said exactly what Kate’s health problem was from the beginning, and her press team should have persuaded her to agree.

It may not be “fair” to Kate, but what part of the insanely intrusive attack she received for not sharing information was “fair”?

Just as all the ramifications of the Mother’s Day photo could have been prevented if the palace had checked with Kate if she had edited anything when she sent it to them. The fact that they didn’t do this when the picture was supposed to debunk conspiracy theories is astounding to me.

The royal family’s biggest star needs better protection, and as she prepares to re-enter public life, it must start now.
