cricket
Priyam started playing cricket when he was 6 years old. His father could not make ends meet, but since Priyam was very good at cricket, his father approached the coach at the “Victoria Park” cricket ground in Meerut and asked him to watch Priyam play. After coach Sanjay Rastogi saw him playing, he immediately knew that Priyam was a skilled batsman and agreed to train Priyam for free. The cricket ground is 40 kilometers from his home and he and one of his siblings take the bus to cricket training every day. In 2018, he was selected to represent the state in the Uttar Pradesh cricket team. He made his debut in the ‘Vijay Hazare Trophy’. A month later, when he played in the Ranji Trophy, he scored his first hundred against Goa.
In 2018, after seeing his performance throughout the year, the selectors considered him for inclusion in the India U-19 squad, but eventually his form declined. The selectors decided to give him time to regain his confidence and form. While playing for Uttar Pradesh, he had the opportunity to meet many Indian cricketers as a guest coach. He particularly remembers his interaction with Suresh Raina. He said Raina gave him some good advice and he learned a lot from her. He said in an interview——
I learned a lot from him and he was a great example of self-discipline. I learned a lot watching him. He gave me confidence and Raina bhai talked about his upbringing and how, at that time, there was a divide between the upperclassmen and the underclassmen and how the underclassmen rarely spoke. He encouraged me and everyone else to speak freely. This is a good move”
Priyam idolizes Sachin Tendulkar and he hopes to meet him one day and get some advice from him. Once, he said in an interview——
What I am today is all because of Sachin Tendulkar. If I hadn’t seen him play, I wouldn’t be here. I grew up watching him. Before every game, I think about Sachin. This gave me the courage and strength to score. Even when I used to play tennis in local tournaments, I always tried to imitate Sachin Paji’s shots. My dream is to meet Sachin Tendulkar, learn from him and one day wear the blue jersey of the Indian team. “
On December 2, BCCI appointed him as the captain of the Indian U-19 team for the 2020 U-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, and he was also the captain of the Indian team for the tour of South Africa.
After being appointed as the captain of the India U-19 team, he said in an interview-
The World Cup will be a huge opportunity. That’s the event where you get noticed, get everyone’s attention, and I’d love to have a big game there. This is a side of balance. We play together all the time. This will help us in South Africa”
