Punit Goenka started his career in 1993 as an intern at Essel Group. His first assignment was to sell amusement park packages to schools in Virar, Mumbai. He worked briefly as an assistant at Essel Packaging and later as an administrative assistant to his father, Subhash Chandra. He subsequently worked at Zee Music Records before becoming Vice President, Coordination and Operations, ASC Enterprises Limited (ASCEL) in December 1997. He became the Group President and CEO of ASCEL Group of Companies on February 1, 2002 and launched Dish TV with his uncle, Jawahar Goel in Delhi. Subsequently, he became the Business Head of Zee Sports, Director of ZEE Digital Convergence Limited and finally the Business Head of ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) on January 1, 2005. In 2007, he became the Director of Adhikaar Foundation and in 2008, he was appointed as the CEO of ZEEL. In the same year, he became a director of ETC Networks Limited. On July 24, 2008, he was appointed as a director of Zee Turner Limited. On January 1, 2010, he became the Managing Director (MD) of ZEEL. On July 9, 2010, he founded the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) and serves as its director. On 20 April 2012, he was appointed as a Director of Prozone Intu Properties Ltd. In 2016, he became the Chairman of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (now known as the Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation). From 2018 to 2020, he served as Chairman of the Indian Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA). In January 2019, he was appointed Chairman of BARC India. He was reappointed as Managing Director and CEO of ZEEL on January 1, 2020 for a term of 5 years.

SEBI bans directorships
On June 12, 2023, Punit Goenka and his father Subhash Goenka were temporarily banned from holding directorships in any listed company by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for allegedly diverting funds from Essel group companies for their own benefit. On July 10, 2023, the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT), an autonomous body that can challenge decisions taken by SEBI, dismissed SEBI’s interim order. The SAT requires SEBI to present the case before the Whole Time Member (WTM) or any other higher authorized officer. On August 14, 2023, SEBI issued another order barring Punit and Subhash from holding any directorship again and claimed that they would complete the investigation within 8 months. On October 30, 2023, the State Administration of Taxation dismissed the order, saying that if any evidence emerges during the investigation, appropriate measures will be taken. In January 2024, SEBI reports suggested that the funds they transferred could be as high as Rs. 10 billion rupees.
