Questlove opens about mental health and what he wish he could have done for some of his past associates who fought.
During the questions and answers after the projection of his latest directorial effort, documentary film Sly lives! (aka the burden of black genius)The musician and Oscar-winning filmmaker compared Fall Sly Stone from Slava in the 70s with pressures that black artists often face. Questlove (real name: Amir Thompson) said he was a witness to the breakup of many musicians with whom he worked on their way to “do it”.
“Maybe one of them is that I think it turned out in line,” said the 54 -year -old Questlove, referring to 12 artists with whom he worked at Electric Lady Studios in New York. “The thing is, it is very unclear that 11 people I worked with in that studio always has a sabotage, a panic, a moment that deals with a career that happens to them.”
“I often wish I could talk about intervention,” he added.

When creating an unconventional music documentary, Questlove said that the artists he had in mind included SZA, Solange, Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill and “Literally everyone.”
Questlove said that the movie “probably closest to what I could get there to a pancake pressure for every artist I have ever worked with.”
He added that he was not exceptional of destructive behavior in response to the pressure of glory, which made him not felt forced to intervene before.

“The way I exaggerate, the way I overeat, as I panic. Worse than, you know, worse than him [Stone] “But, you know, my vices do not seem so drastic as an angelic dust or anything else.”
When he no longer performed in 2020, Questlove said he spent time working on therapy, where he “hit the can down the road,” and another begged to prone to his own mental health.

The group was known for its hits in the late 60s and early 70s such as “Everyday People” and “Family affair”, and Stone, now 81, has been infamously struggling with abuse of substances for decades.
From the 2025 movie edition, Questlove said Sly lives! (aka the burden of black genius) It comes when “the minds will be ripe for it” and “we are on the right track”.

“We hope that a lot more artists will see it and really start to ask these questions and go with it and work on yourself,” he said.
