McAdams made it Mary Jane debuted in April, and she told PEOPLE after opening night that she felt “honored” to take the stage.

“Broadway was something I always wanted to do, but I was really scared about it,” she said. “Standing on that stage seems like the fulfillment of a long-standing dream.”

The actress admitted that being on stage makes her nervous, but she manages. “I’m less nervous now, but [the nerves are] still there; I’m still nervous every night. And that’s fine! We know that there’s a certain amount of nerve that’s good and that drives you forward and just makes the performance that much more lively, so you want to keep some of that. I embrace my nerves!”

Rachel McAdams admits she was ‘intimidated’ to go to Broadway but ‘pinch myself every day’

Mary Jane is the story of a single mother with a sick little son. However, Mary Jane is steadfast and refuses to let anything despair her. A mother herself — she shares two children, a 6-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter, with longtime partner Jamie Linden — McAdams brought her own experience to the role.

“You have a really wild mama bear in this show. Now that I have kids of my own, I have a really deep understanding of what that is and how it feels to know that you would do anything for your child,” McAdams told PEOPLE. “This mother lives in that place every day and I understand that intimately. I don’t think you have to be a mom to play a great mom, but it definitely lightened my load in terms of research and guesswork.”

The Tony Awards air live from Lincoln Center in New York on Sunday, June 16, on CBS (8 ET/PT) and streaming on Paramount+.
