After completing his studies in 1965, Rahul Bajaj joined the Bajaj Group, a diversified business group founded by his grandfather Jamnalal Bajaj. In 1968, he succeeded his father as Chairman and Managing Director of the Bajaj Group. Under his leadership, the group’s flagship Bajaj Auto’s revenue grew from Rs 75 crore to Rs 12,000 crore, with the company’s scooter Bajaj Chetak being the main growth driver.

In 2005, he appointed his son Rajiv Bajaj as Managing Director of Bajaj Group. In 2008, Rahul split Bajaj Auto into three companies to improve shareholder returns and give his sons Rajiv and Sanjiv more control over the company’s operations. Rahul Bajaj owns 24% stake in Bajaj Holdings & Investment and 10% stake in insurance and consumer lending company Bajaj Finserv. His other investments include a 2 per cent stake in Bajaj Finance, a 14 per cent stake in home appliances company Bajaj Electrical and a 19 per cent stake in Mukand, a maker of wire rods, alloy castings and steel bars.
