Rahul Chitella served as Assistant Director and Script Supervisor on the 2010 short film Door to Door. In September 2010, Rahul Chitella started working as a creative producer at Mirabai Films in Mumbai. Rahul has also worked with Mira Nair in several films, including The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), Conversations with God (2014), Queen of Katui (2016) and A Suitable Boy (2019 TV series). In 2011, Rahul Chitra directed a short film called “Mute”. He also wrote the screenplay for the film. In 2016, he served as the director and screenwriter of “Shor Se Shuruaat”, a collection of seven short films. He directed and wrote the script for the 2016 short film Azaad, which was presented during the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Press Freedom Day Forum in Jakarta. In 2017, Azad won the Best Short Film Award at the Indian Film Festival Houston (IFFH).

In 2023, Rahul Chitella directed his first feature film Gulmohar. He said in an interview that it was his wife who suggested he write a family movie script. He further said that he decided to do Gulmohar as not many family movies are being made these days. Talking about this, he said,
I had another script but no actor wanted to do it because it was a two-hero movie. I was really frustrated, and then my wife told me, write a family movie. This is what sells. This is indeed the basic origin of Gul Mohal. Everyone is making these action-oriented movies filled with gunfire and swearing, and in the midst of it all, we have a sweet flower blooming. I hope people like it. It’s true that not many family movies and human dramas are made. “

- Rahul Chitra said in an interview that he became interested in screenwriting when he was in school. He further said that he used to convert sentences written in Hindi novels into dialogues and record them. Talking about this, he said,
Funny how it all started. When I was in school we were asked to memorize Hindi literary novels but I used to find it very difficult. Quite by chance, one day I picked up one of the novels (I think it was called “Naya Rasta”) and started rewriting the text into conversations between characters and recording them on my Walkman. I used different sounds and also had some random background music playing on my mini keyboard. “
