Ragini Chandy was born into a South Indian family. Her father is a school principal. She had seven siblings, two of whom became nuns. She married Varghese Chandy (a stock market professional) on July 31, 1970, before her graduation. The couple had a daughter, Ceina Thomas, who married and settled in the United States.

Profession
Before starting her career as an actress, she worked in a real estate company. Later, she opened a fitness center for women and seniors. After fitness centers were closed, she studied mathematics and within two months, she mastered the 10th standard mathematics syllabus. Later, she provided tutoring classes for poor students. She said in an interview,
Afsi, Chikku and Regina were my first students. At first, it was just maths, but knowing they were failing in other subjects, I made them live at my house for a month before the public exams and give them tutoring in all subjects. They became the first students in the region to achieve first-class results. “Today, they are nurses, teachers and M.Com holders respectively and still keep in touch. After this, Ragini went on to lead several batches of students. Sometimes she took them with her to clean the street in front of her house.”
After a few years, she closed the tuition center and started sewing. Then she passed the NCFM exam and helped her husband trade stocks. In 2016, she made her acting debut in the Malayalam comedy film Oru Muthassi Gadha.
In an interview, when she was asked how she bagged the role in the film Oru Muthassi Gadha (2016), she said:
There is a notice on a website about auditions for actors between the ages of 60 and 70. Anil from F3 Health Club, which I go to every day, told me to try it. But my skills are very poor and I don’t know how to apply online. So I asked Maju Mathew (who plays Biju in Action Hero) to tell Jude. Jude happened to see my video and liked what I was doing. So he went home the next day with his pregnant wife Diyana and Apu, the actor who plays a Bengali servant in the movie. I was wearing the same clothes (T-shirt and slacks) and I heard Jude say, “Ithu aanu nammude muthassi (This is our grandma).”
She has acted in films like Gandhigaril Unniyarcha (2017) and The Gambler (2019).

On January 5, 2020, she entered Bigg Boss Malayalam 2 House as a contestant, hosted by actor Mohanlal. She was the first contestant to enter the house and became the first captain of the BB house.
