Rajiv Khandelwal is from New Delhi. He graduated from Delhi Public School, New Delhi and later did his Bachelor of Commerce from Kirorimal College, Delhi University. Thereafter, he did his Postgraduate Diploma in Rural Management from Anand Institute of Rural Management (IRMA), Gujarat (1985-1987). In May 2005, Rajiv Khandelwal and Krishnavtar Sharma co-founded Aajeevika Bureau, a non-profit charitable trust registered in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

In 2004, Rajiv Khandelwal was shocked to see 15-20 migrant workers living in small, overcrowded rooms in Rajkot, Gujarat, with a few suffering from tuberculosis and no medical facilities, food or other necessities. This was an eye-opener for him and he was moved by the plight of migrant workers. In 2005, Rajiv Khandelwal became the co-founder and executive director of Aajeevika Bureau, a non-profit charitable trust registered in Udaipur, Rajasthan. It is a non-profit organization that provides legal aid, skill training, social security and livelihood support to migrant workers in construction, manufacturing and allied industries in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

- In 2005, he was selected as an Ashoka Fellow for his innovative ideas to address the problems of seasonal migrant workers.
- In 2010, he received the Schwab Foundation’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

- On October 2, 2020, Rajiv Khandelwal appeared on Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan’s show Kaun Banega Crorepati (King of Fortune) along with Aajeevika Bureau co-founder Krishnavtar Sharma. Kaun Banega Crorepati is an Indian television game show where contestants answer a series of multiple-choice questions to win a huge cash prize. Kaun Banega Crorepati invited Rajiv Khandelwal and Krishnavtar Sharma to participate in its Karamveer Special, which is about an organization or individual who is relentlessly working towards the betterment of society or humanity in some way.
