Ram Chandra Prasad Singh is an Indian politician and the former national president of the Janata Dal. Before joining politics, he served as an IAS officer. During the Prime Minister’s Cabinet reshuffle in 2021, Ram Chandra Prasad was appointed as the Steel Minister by Narendra Modi.

After completing his formal education, RCP passed the Civil Service Examination and graduated in 1984. In 1984, he joined the Indian Administrative Service and was initially posted as Joint Magistrate of Sultanpur District. Three years later, he was appointed Chief Development Officer, Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat. Five years later he became collector and magistrate of Barabanki, Hamirpur, Fatehpur and Rampur. RCP Singh has been appointed as the private secretary to former Posts and Telecommunications Minister Beni Prasad Verma for almost a year now. He then served as personal secretary to Nitish Kumar, who had been with the state government for nearly seven years when he was posted in the Ministry of Railways, Agriculture and Surface Transport. In 2004, Ramchandra Prasad was appointed as the Additional Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Noida Authority, which operates under the supervision of the Uttar Pradesh government. In 2005, Nitish Kumar was appointed as the Chief Minister of Bihar and Ram Chandra Prasad Singh served as the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Bihar. In 2010, Ramchandra Prasad Singh received VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme) from the Indian Administrative Service.

After his early retirement, Ram Chandra Prasad Singh joined the BJP (United) in 2010 and began his political career. He was elected to the Bundestag and served as a member of the Standing Committee on Railways and the Advisory Committee on Foreign and Home Affairs. He was appointed General Secretary of the party and subsequently National Chairman of the United People’s Party for a term from December 27, 2020 to July 31, 2021. Amid the ministerial reshuffle in Narendra Modi’s cabinet, RCP Singh has been appointed as the national president of the UP. On July 7, 2021, the Minister of Steel, Union Cabinet.
He resigned from the United People’s Party on August 6, 2022, over alleged corruption, for which the party had issued a show-cause notice to him.

Facts/Trivia
- Multiple media reports claim that Ram Chandra Prasad is a close aide of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The report also stated that Ram Chandra joined VRS on the advice of Nitish Kumar and joined the Janata Party (United Party) in 2010.
- Ram Chandra Prasad was considered a calm and collected man and was considered a “man of few words” by other members of the party. He held key positions within the party and was appointed General Secretary of the United People’s Party.
- In December 2019, when a majority of the parliament members opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, Ram Chandra Prasad defended the bill. During a parliamentary session, then Janata Dal (United) national vice-president Prashant Kishor opposed the bill.
- Despite lobbying hard to get a federal cabinet berth from the BJP-JJD alliance, the BJP won the Lok Sabha polls with a majority and insisted that the party’s allies should bear “token representation” right”. This decision by the BJP forced Nitish Kumar to withdraw his support to the BJP.

- Ram Chandra’s daughter Lipi Singh made headlines when a police team opened fire on a group of people who were going to bury a statue of goddess Durga on her orders. The incident left one person dead and several injured, following which many protested against Lipi Singh and demanded her removal. Following this, the Election Commission suspended Lipi Singh from her district councillorship.
