Randeep became involved in politics when he was involved in the day-to-day work of the Congress party with his father. His father was working hard to rebuild the Congress party in Haryana. Randeep soon became an active member of the Congress party and was appointed joint secretary of the Haryana Youth Congress in 1986. He is the youngest joint secretary of the Congress party. Eventually, he was promoted as General Secretary of Haryana Youth Congress. In 1993, Surjewala contested for the first time in the Haryana Assembly by-election in Navana Assembly constituency, but did not win.

He worked in his constituency for three years and contested the 1996 parliamentary elections. He was sent against the then chief minister of Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala. In March 2000, he was appointed national president of the Indian Youth Congress after winning the Haryana Legislative Assembly. He held this position until February 2005, making him the longest-serving president of the Indian Youth Congress. In 2004, he was appointed secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) by Rahul Gandhi.

He also contested the elections from Navana Assembly constituency and defeated the current Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala. The Congress also won the Haryana assembly elections and Surjewala was appointed as a cabinet minister in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government. During his time as a cabinet minister, he held a variety of public sector, power and parliamentary affairs portfolios. In 2009, he was re-elected as MLA from the newly created Kaithal parliamentary constituency; after the Narwana parliamentary constituency was delimited. In 2014, he was re-elected as MLA from Kesar Assembly constituency in Haryana. In January 2019, Congress announced Surjewala as its candidate for the Jind Assembly by-election in Haryana. Surjewala reportedly did not want to contest as he was a sitting MP but Rahul Gandhi convinced him to contest from Jind; as he wanted a by-election ahead of the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections in October 2019 Zhong won with a strong face. Surjewala was badly defeated in the by-election and finished third. He contested the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections from Kaithal assembly constituency but lost to Leela Ram of the BJP.

He was appointed as the general secretary in-charge of Madhya Pradesh on August 17, 2023.

  • In October 2012, a Dalit girl from Hisar was raped. The girl’s father committed suicide after the accused circulated a video of the girl being raped. The girl said her father worked as a gardener at Surjewala’s home, but he neither spoke to the family nor visited them.
