Chandigarh University MMS scandal
On September 17, 2022, a female student accused another girl of filming a video while she was taking a shower in the girls’ hostel of Chandigarh University. The female student was taking a shower when she discovered that another girl, a first-year MBA student at the school, had placed a mobile phone in her bathroom. She was shocked when she saw it and immediately asked the accused girl about the phone. She then called other girls in the hostel and they started asking the accused girl about the whole thing. Subsequently, a video of a girl from the dormitory went viral on social media. In the video, the accused girl was being questioned by fellow dormitories. Initially, the accused girl said she made the video of herself for her boyfriend.
The girls then called the jail superintendent, Rajwinder Kaur, and when the jail superintendent asked the accused girls the same question rigorously, she admitted that she had made the videos of the girls. A video of the same went viral on social media in which the accused girl admitted that she made the video and sent it to her boyfriend Sunny Mehta from Shimla.

She then opened a WhatsApp chat and said a boy named Rankaj Verma wanted videos of the girls.

The accused girl said the boys blackmailed her into filming the video. She later admitted that she had been filming the girls taking showers for the past few months. About 60 girls were staying in the same hotel as the accused girl, so it is speculated that she took videos of about 60 girls. The warden then referred the matter to the university management team, which subsequently lodged a complaint against the girl with the Mohali police station under Section 354-C of the IPC and IT Act. As soon as things came to a head in the college, the accused girl was locked in her room to protect her from other students. Later, a university student said,
The dormitory where the incident occurred was a male dormitory until the last class. This year, due to the increase in the number of female students, it was converted into a female dormitory. Since this is Boys Hostel, there is no partition in the bathroom. The new students have only been here for a month, and the shower area in the dormitory bathroom is still very ordinary. Therefore, they had no access to the videos made by the accused girl. The girls claim many of the videos were also filmed through cracks in bathroom doors. The hotel has no CCTV etc so it is almost impossible to verify all these claims. “
During preliminary investigation, Mohali police said the girl did not send MMS but a video to her boyfriend. Some hostesses said the warden initially asked them to end the matter. Later, one of the female victims received threatening calls from Canada on her WhatsApp number. The girl was verbally abused and threatened during the call. Shortly thereafter, the protests intensified and did not. The number of protesters increased to 5,000. Some media even claimed that several female students committed suicide in university dormitories. However, police denied this at a press conference and said the girls were in poor health and were taken to the ambulance. Meanwhile, Himachal Police started searching for the accused boys Sunny Mehta and Lankaji Verma in Shimla. Soon, Sunny was arrested from Dalli in Shimla and Rankaja was arrested from Rohru, Shimla. After the arrest, the boys were handed over to the Punjab Police for further investigation. Regarding the arrest, the Attorney General of Himachal Pradesh said:
Punjab Police arrives at PS Rohru in Shimla. Accused Sunny Mehta has been handed over to them. Adopt a zero-tolerance approach to crimes against women. If we receive any accompanying evidence, we will take action in accordance with the law. “
Speaking on the matter, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said,
I have ordered the police officials to cooperate with the Punjab Police. According to the information we have, the kid who made these videos go viral is from Himachal Pradesh. Legal action will be taken against him. “
According to Mohali police, Rankaja told during interrogation that his photos were being misused and the WhatsApp account of the girl shown in the video was fake. When Sunny Mehta was questioned, he said that he had not made any video. The three accused were then brought to the Kalal Court in Mohali, Punjab, where they were sent to police remand for seven days. A special investigation team consisting of three women has been set up to investigate the matter. Initially, two videos were found on the accused girl’s phone; the first was of herself and the second was of another girl whose face could not be seen. University officials subsequently suspended two wardens and others were replaced overnight. The university has announced a holiday from September 19, 2022 to September 24, 2022. Earlier, Vice-Chancellor of the university Dr RS Bawa said,
The rumor that 60 questionable MMS’s from students have been found is completely false. According to our investigation, there is only one video of the defendant himself. She had never filmed anyone else on videotape before. “
Rankaj’s brother Pankaj said in an interview that Rankaj’s photos were misused by girls. He said we had even lodged a complaint with Shimladali police station that Rankaji’s photo was being misused. Pankaj said,
