Ravi Shankar Prasad was born on 30 August 1954 in Patna, Bihar, India (70 years old; as of 2024). He received his BA (Hons) and MA in Political Science from Patna University. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Patna University. While at the university, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Students’ Union and a member of the Senate, Arts and Law Faculty. He is a member of the Finance Committee of Patna University. As a student, he was also associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and held various positions in the organization.
In 1975, during the Emergency, Ravi Shankar was arrested for protesting against Indira Gandhi’s government. He was also an activist for human rights and civil liberties. He started his career as a lawyer in Patna High Court in 1980. In 1995, he was nominated to the National Executive Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party and served as a member of the National Executive Committee of the party for 20 consecutive years. In 1999, he was appointed as Senior Advocate of Patna High Court.
In 2000, Ravi Shankar was appointed as Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court. He filed a PIL against the then Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam. He represented the deity in the Ayodhya Ram Temple proceedings before the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court and argued in many more high-profile cases.

Ravi Shankar was born into a Kayastha Hindu family, his father was the late Thakur Prasad and his mother was Bhimla Prasad. His father, Thakur Prasad, is a lawyer in the Patna High Court and the former president of the Bihar Bharatiya Jan Sangh, a political wing of the RSS, which later reorganized into the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
Ravi Shankar has two elder sisters Pratibha and Sujata and one younger sister Anuradha Prasad (Managing Director, News 24).
On February 3, 1982, Ravi Shankar married Maya Shankar, professor of history and historian at Patna University. The couple has a son Aditya (a lawyer) and a daughter Aditi.
Profession
In 2000, Ravi Shankar was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bihar. In 2001, during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister, he served as the Minister of State for Coal and Mines and a member of the legal panel of the National Convener of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2002, he was appointed Minister of State for Law and Justice. That same year, he amended the Representation of the People Act, ending the criminalization of politics. He also took the initiative to facilitate the masses and deliver justice quickly. Furthermore, in 2003, he became the Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He initiated venture capital and good marketing of Indian cinema and reforms in radio and television.
In 2006, Ravi Shankar was appointed as the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party and was re-elected as a member of the Indian Parliament for a second term. He has served as a finance member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee. 2010, He was elected as the All India General Secretary and Chief National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2012, he was elected to the Federal House of Representatives for the third time and was nominated as deputy leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Hence, in 2016, he was appointed Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology and Law and Justice by the Government of India.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha from Patna Sahib constituency in Bihar by a margin of 2,78,198 votes. He won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with 1,53,846 votes and retained the Patna Upper House seat.

- In 2005, during an election meeting, Ravi Shankar Prasad was shot in the left arm by a gunman who broke into the dais where the BJP leader was sitting. The accused was identified as Munna Rai, who was lynched by BJP supporters after he tried to assassinate Ravi. However, doctors declared Ravi Shankar out of danger.
