Ravi Sinha is a 1988 batch police officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS). In June 2023, he made headlines when he was appointed as secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India’s external intelligence agency.

Ravi Sinha was born on Tuesday, January 14, 1964, in Bhojpur district, Bihar, India (59 years old as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Capricorn. After completing his studies, he attended St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. After completing his formal education, Ravi appeared for the civil service examination conducted by UPSC and passed it. After completing police training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Sinha was posted to the Madhya Pradesh cadre on August 21, 1989.
In 2000, after Chhattisgarh was separated from Madhya Pradesh and a new state was created, Sinha was transferred to the Chhattisgarh cadre. Thereafter, he was posted to the Chhattisgarh Police headquarters in Raipur. Sinha was later posted as the Commissioner of Police (CSP), Durg, Chhattisgarh. Sinha was considered an expert in counter-insurgency, and due to this expertise he held important police posts in Jammu and Kashmir, the northeastern region of India, and the Red Corridor, an area heavily influenced by Nazism. In 2007, he was sent to New Delhi as central representative. Thereafter, he was posted to Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). In 2016, he assumed the role of Head of R&AW Operations. It is reported that he, along with then R&AW Secretary Rajinder Khanna, played a key role in the planning and execution of surgical strikes led by Indian Army Special Forces in Pakistan in 2016 following the attack on Uri Army Camp in Kashmir. . Sinha has also served as a Private Security Officer (PSO) and Special Secretary to the Cabinet Secretariat (SR). He also assisted former R&AW secretary Samant Goel in formulating the action plan for the Balakot airstrike after the 2019 Pulwama attack that killed many CRPF soldiers. On June 19, 2023, the Indian government announced the appointment of Ravi Sinha as the 24th Secretary of R&AW; he will serve until June 2025.
