Grace, 50, emerged from the jungle yesterday evening and was on a flight to the UK just hours later.

She looked thin and haggard as she boarded the 11.25pm flight from Brisbane to Singapore.

ITV said the food critic had left for “medical reasons”.

Those close to Grace said she was completely exhausted after the nine-day stay in the camp.

A source said: “Grace is very relieved to be out of I’m Famous. She stopped because she couldn’t continue, neither mentally nor physically.

“It was incredibly difficult for her and everything became too much.

“The cold and wet weather, together with the hard tasks and lack of food, took their toll.

“She has lost a lot of weight and looks skinny. Her friends just want her to come home.”

Those close to Grace said it became apparent that something was wrong when she did not join in on camp discussions – most notably the Brexit camp clash between Nigel Farage and Fred Sirieix.

The source added: “Grace is incredibly talented and very passionate about politics.

“When she failed to get involved, it was clear that she felt defeated.

“It’s also the first anniversary of her dear papa George’s death in a few weeks, so no doubt that was on her mind.

“Getting out is the best thing she could have done. I’m a Celebrity is a really tough show and it’s not for everyone.”

Grace left after being nominated for the Down The Tubes Bushtucker Trial last night.

Her face looked blank as her name was read, and friends said it would be the last straw.

The Carlisle-born TV presenter and writer, who was popular with fans of the show, started showing signs of trouble last week.

Said Josie Gibson at the camp: “I’ve had enough of everything. I’ve had enough. I just want to go home.”

Before that, Grace threw herself into grueling challenges including Pole Position and Touchdown of Terror.

She was the best in the latter, and she told her team afterwards: “I really needed that.” I really needed to do well in that trial because I was really doubting myself.”

Over the weekend, insiders at the ITV show said she had become more despondent, with one adding: “Grace was clearly feeling very down.

“She is extremely popular in the camp and the others rallied around her, but it was clear that she had had enough.

“Leaving was the best decision. The show is meant to test you, but not break you.”

Back in 2012, she wrote about the show in a newspaper: “Let’s be honest, I’m a Celebrity, love it or hate it, is far from a luxury viewing experience.

“It’s a childish venture of starvation, televised prison and animal cruelty, abbreviated to £1 Icelandic curry adverts.”

But she said she watched and added: “We all need our big stupid party somewhere.”
