Reese Witherspoon Says It’s Important to ‘Edit Your Friendships’: ‘Everybody Out There Over 40 Knows’

Reese Witherspoon gets real about how she maintains friendships in her busy life.

On Friday, Legal blonde star, 47, spoke at a conference in Boston and opened up about how she nurtures her inner circle.

“Editing. Edit your friendships,” Witherspoon told NBC News Daily anchor Zinhle Essamuah at HubSpot’s annual INBOUND gathering.

“Everybody out there over 40 knows. If you don’t contribute to my life, get out of my life. My grandmother used to say that people are radiators or drains. Hold on to the radiator,” Morning show added the actress.

When it came to discussing how she dealt with rejection, Witherspoon admitted that she was introduced to the concept when she was “so young.”

“Rejection was so early in my life that I learned a long time ago that what other people think of me is none of my business. Other people’s opinion of you, and everyone will have their own opinion, is not important,” she continued.

Witherspoon added that living life on her terms is liberating.

“I really don’t care what anyone thinks. I’ll do my job anyway. I’ll date whoever I want, I’ll go hang out with a friend no one likes. When you let go of that feeling of being crushed or held back by other people’s opinions, you are free. You are completely free,” said the Oscar winner.

Witherspoon finalized her divorce from Jim Toth in August after 12 years of marriage. The former couple has a son, Tennessee, 10. The To walk the line the actress also shares two children with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe – daughter Ava (23) and son Deacon (19).

For Friday’s INBOUND conference, the mission was to “focus on human connection to foster transformative growth, meaningful conversations, and piecemeal insights.” The event brought “icons spanning industry, marketing [and] sales executives, wellness experts and acclaimed authors” to Boston.

While speaking with Essamuah, Witherspoon talked about the lack of female-driven projects in Hollywood, which led her to “put my money where my mouth is” and “actually walk the walk” to start the production company that became Hello Sunshine.

The media company, founded in 2016, is behind projects such as Daisy Jones & The Six, Morning show, Truth be toldand From scratch.

“Many, many advisors have told me several times not to invest my own money. I saw people taking money from studios and I saw how diluted the product was. I saw that they were sitting on material that was never made,” Witherspoon explained of her decision to personally invest in her production company Hello Sunshine.

She continued: “And I thought that if you want to function and do something differently, you have to think about it differently. And you have to capitalize it differently. So probably about a year and we had two of these three Oscar nominations, we had a television show that ended. And I couldn’t keep the lights on.”

Witherspoon credited Toth, 50, with helping refine her approach.

“I turned to my then husband and business partner and revised the business plan. And so we started raising capital, which was a lot of asking people for money. It was terrifying,” she said. “Every day I would wake up and do something to make my dream come true.”

She also shared a recap on Instagram on Friday.

“Boston! It was [a] wicked good time. Loved the clam chowder, Dunkin’s cream pie specials, and the duck tour 💗🍩🦆,” she captioned her post from the conference on Friday.
