Reginae Carter Reflects on How Dad Lil Wayne Taught Her to Have ‘Thick Skin’ from a Young Age (Exclusive)

Reginae Carter — the 24-year-old daughter of rapper Lil Wayne and TV personality Toya Johnson — reflects on her father’s parenting.

The actress and reality star hosted the NYX Professional Makeup Mon-Stars Halloween party in Los Angeles on Friday and spoke exclusively with PEOPLE about how her father taught her to have a thick skin in the entertainment industry.

“Dad taught me a lot about being in the industry, period,” Carter tells PEOPLE. “Because he’s been in this industry since he was 12 years old, he just taught me to stay strong, to always be true to myself, to never let anyone tell me what I can and can’t do.”

Lil Wayne lit up the stage with his opening performance at the 2023 MTV VMAs.

She adds that “if you focus on that, and if you’ve got your back behind it, if you’re going to back everything you put forward, you’re good.”

Carter, who appeared on Social society and starred in a limited series Terror Lake Drive, reveals that she’s been getting backlash in the industry since she was 5 years old. However, because of this, she is more confident and says that she does not let the hate get to her.

“I definitely have this tough skin because of everything I’ve been through in this industry, with all the lies, with all the things I have to hear about my parents,” she says. “Even my aunts and stuff, this industry that I grew up in with a lot of people that they talk about and have these titles.”

The In the box star also notes that her family doesn’t let negativity get to them and they “just know who they are.”

Ahead of her 25th birthday in November, Carter reveals she’s not under any pressure to set goals by a certain age.

“I don’t set standards or in any way influence where I want to go because I think so big for myself,” she tells PEOPLE. “Even today. What I do today, I want to be bigger tomorrow.”

The actress adds that she is grateful to her parents. “Because I wouldn’t be who I am if it wasn’t for them, if it wasn’t for my mom, who humbled me and taught me, teaching me how to maneuver to be an educated, beautiful, young lady,” Carter says.

Ahead of the event, Carter teamed up with NYX Professional Makeup for their Halloween campaign, NYX Mon-Stars, in which the brand—in partnership with Universal Studios—reimagined classic monsters for the modern world.

For her part, Carter transformed into the “Mummi Twin” alongside model Sydney Bell. The look, created by SFX makeup artist Mimi Choi, took approximately seven hours to create, the star told PEOPLE.

As a professional, she took the process lightly: “Everyone had fun. [We] listened to music. Who doesn’t love makeup?”
