René Auberjonois was born on June 1, 1940 in New York, New York, United States. He was American by nationality, and had Swiss-French, Russian, German and Italian ancestry. Rene Murat Auberjonois was his birth name. Fernand Auberjonois, his father, was a Cold War-era international journalist and Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer. His mother, Laure Louise Napoléone Eugénie Caroline Murat, was the great-great-granddaughter of Joachim Murat. From his mother’s first marriage, Auberjonois has a sister, a brother and two half-sisters. After World War II, his family moved to Paris, France. He decided to become an actor from an early age. His family returned to the United States after spending several years in France.
His university was in London. At school, he was very interested in music and art. In 1962, he graduated from the Carnegie-Mellon University Institute of Technology.

After college, Rene began a career in theater acting. During the early stages of his career, he traveled between Los Angeles, California and New York to appear in a number of theater productions. He was instrumental in founding the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music Repertory Company in New York. In 1969, he won a Tony Award for his performance as Sebastian Baye in the theater production of Coco.
In 1973, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Good Doctor. He made his film debut in 1970. His first film role was as Father Mulcahy in the 1970 film M*A*S*H. Since then, he has appeared in a number of successful films, including Police Academy 5: Miami Beach (1988) and The Patriot (2000), in which he played the criminal Tony.
Rene has also appeared in numerous television productions. Rhinemann Exchange, The Dark Secret of Harvest Home, Disney’s Geppetto, Gore Vidal’s Billy The Kid, a remake of Connecticut Yankees in King Arthur’s Court, and the miniseries Sally Hemings: An American Scandal (2000) are among his television credits. In addition, he also worked as a voice actor.
