Renter Who Found Roommate's 'Rotting Food' in the Kitchen Sink Asks for a Solution: 'I Am So Drained'

The renter is faced with a less than ideal living situation thanks to his messy roommate.

In a Nov. 3 post on Reddit’s “Bad Roommates” forum, a user — who posted anonymously under the name DramedyWar — wrote that their current roommate doesn’t clean up after themselves.

Posting photos of a kitchen sink and counter piled high with dishes, as well as a dirty stovetop and dirty bucket, the user wrote that their roommate last washed the dishes “when she had someone over a month ago,” adding: “The bucket is also old a month and it smelled like sewage.”

“There’s rotting food and shrimp in the dishes and they stink and they’ve collected flies,” the Redditor continued, noting that the roommate “was my friend, but now I’m so exhausted and I can’t fix the situation.”

“I pass through the kitchen just to eat something, and I don’t really know how to cook. When I want to drink water, I’m too disgusted to drink from the sink, so I buy bottles,” they added.

Redditor says she banned roommate from dorm room fridge after discovering it was full of ‘rotten’ food

A Reddit user included some clarification in the comments section, sharing that their roommate “has depression and chronic migraines.”

“She refuses to see a therapist because of her depression. Her room is also always cluttered and I can’t see the floor of the room,” they continued.

“This is her mother’s house and I can’t move [soon] due to financial issues,” the Redditor explained at the time, also sharing that while they had “a lot of conversations” with their roommate over the course of a year, nothing had changed, with the roommate even saying that she “didn’t care” about the current state of the house.

“What frustrates me the most is that when she has guests, she finds the will to clean everything and be seen. I was angry, petty, I tried to talk, but she just doesn’t care,” the user added.

Many Reddit users expressed their support for the original poster.

“You need to move dude,” one user commented, while another replied: “You’re not going to change this person. One of you needs to move, it doesn’t matter who.”

“I don’t understand how people allow themselves to become this disgusting and lazy. I’m sorry you have to deal with this,” wrote another.

One commenter encouraged the original poster to find a new living situation as soon as possible while suggesting a financial strategy to help save for a deposit.

“You have to go. Somehow, someway,” they wrote. “Make an agreement not to pay rent and save for a deposit somewhere else. Let people go around that dump on the counter and watch as no one rents the place after you. But either way you have to figure it out and leave.”
