RHOSLC's Mary Cosby Sobs During Heart-Wrenching Conversation with Son After He Reveals Drug Addiction: ‘I Let Him Down'

Mary Cosby is letting viewers watch her take on a challenge she never thought she’d face.

In the episode of November 27 The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Mary sat down with her son Robert Jr. to confront his drug addiction. In a rare moment for Housewives franchise, cameras rolled as Mary’s 21-year-old son admitted to abusing various substances after she noticed troubling changes in his behavior.

“Robert was a perfect child,” she said in her confessional. “He was very good at school. He got straight A’s until he graduated. When he decided to do something, he did it. He was like our reward, very smart, very advanced. That’s the Robert I know and that’s the Robert I’m trying to get to.”

When she entered Robert Jr.’s room, Mary told him that he had to be honest with her about what was going on, saying, “You have to be honest. You have to talk to me.”

He then revealed that he had taken Xanax after being up all night.

“So, are you just going to sleep off the day? Just sleep all day?” Mary asked.

“No, I just took half to cool off and then I took Adderall to balance out the Xanax,” he admitted.

Mary became tearful, asking her if Robert Jr. thought. that he has a problem. “Are you unhappy?” she asked.

“Sometimes I feel like, I don’t know, it’s just that life is like this chicken without seasoning,” he explained. “But when I get high, it’s like spice.”

He then revealed that he first took Xanax – a prescription anti-anxiety drug – when he was 16 and that a friend had given it to him at a party.

“That’s when I said, ‘I like this,'” he continued. “I started buying it. Then I started taking Xanax with acid and then Molly with Xanax, because I really like Xanax, so I mixed it with everything, Xanax and cocaine.”

“You know, regular 30 milligram Oxys?” he asked his mom, referring to the opioid painkiller Oxycontin. “I noticed that this was a turning point for me. I was taking 10 at a time, and I didn’t even feel it. I couldn’t feel it at all.”

As she began to cry, Mary reassured Robert Jr. that she would not “judge” him for opening up to her.

“I can help you,” she pleaded. “I can try to help you, but you have to help yourself, because I won’t support it. I’m not. You know I’m not. Do you accept that this is a problem, that you have a problem?”

While he was silent, Maria’s crying turned into sobs.

“I’m just disappointed in myself,” Mary told the cameras. “I feel like I let him down somewhere. I am very aware and know that Robert smoked weed. I know he would eat edibles, but still I only believed him in my mind, thinking he would stop there. And apparently I was wrong. I mean, obviously wrong. I missed the mark.”

Then she said to her son, “You are blessed. You wake up every morning, every day is a new day, a blessed day to waste, to get high.”

“You’re going to die,” she added.

Robert Jr. then he poignantly admitted, “That’s when I wanted to die.”

“You know how that would kill me?” Mary answered.

“I felt like a stain — I just felt like this world wasn’t for me,” he shared in an emotional scene. “You’re the only reason I didn’t kill myself.”

“You must know that I love you more than anything,” Mary cried. “More than anything in this world. I think I love you more than dad, like, don’t ever tell dad I said that, but you’re my friend, you’re my son, you’re my gift. God gave you to me. You are the only thing that made me happy. Before I had you, I was never happy. You came and you were so real. It was everything I could hope for in a person.”

Wiping away his own tears, Robert Jr. said, “I hardly began to be happy again.”

“Please recognize it, own it and change it. Because you can,” Mary said as she reached out to her son and pulled him into a hug.

“I love you,” he whispered to her.

In September, Mary offered an update on Robert Jr., saying he was doing better.

“He’s beautiful, beautiful,” she said. – I couldn’t be happier.

Mary shares Robert Jr. with her husband Robert Cosby Sr. On September 28, the couple celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary.

During the season one confessional, Mary revealed that Robert Sr. was her grandmother’s second husband and that her grandmother had an “arranged” marriage for Mary. “Before she died, she made it very clear that she wanted me to be the one to take her place in the church and inherit everything,” said Mary, who is Pentecostal. “It came with houses, money, our church and marrying her husband.”
