Rick Morton Wikipedia, Twitter, Book, Journalist, Partner, Brother: Rick Morton had no idea that five months after writing One Hundred Years of Filth, the most talked about Australian memoir of the year, he would be locked in a sweltering studio with no air conditioning, reading your own words for hours.

Yet that’s exactly the situation Morton found herself in this month while recording her Bolinda-published audiobook on a hot summer’s day in Melbourne.
“In one particular place I was falling and they repeated the previous sentence that inexplicably said: ‘Chickens were still chickens,'” he says. “I don’t even remember writing it, but that’s all I can think of right now. Further.”
There were painful moments mixed with humorous. Morton spent his childhood on a remote cattle station in western Queensland, a five-hour drive from the nearest major city. When he entered the kitchen at the age of 7, he saw his father kissing a 19-year-old governess. Deb, her mother, was in the hospital caring for her older brother and her younger sister, who suffered severe burns as a result of the accident.
When she returned, her husband had already left. After being evicted from her property, Deb rounded up her children and moved into an emergency housing commission residence in gloomy Charleville. The family was forced to live hand-to-hand after receiving no child support and little to no work experience.
Morton, who is currently a social affairs reporter for The Australian, tells me over coffee in Canberra that even today, “I will look for clues and signs that I have been abandoned and abandoned.” Through her difficult childhood and horrible family history, however, there is a silver lining: books.
One Hundred Years of Filth, which was published in July and is currently in its third edition, received a ‘highly commendable’ rating from Australia’s most prestigious literary award, the Victorian Premier Literary Awards, and was shortlisted by Walkley. Christos Tsiolkas called Morton a “crack storyteller” and Tim Winton wrote him a handwritten letter to express his “movement”.

One Hundred Years of Filth is occasionally brutal, occasionally vicious, occasionally sad, but never self-pitying. As Morton struggles with financial difficulties, the challenges of growing up gay in a traditionally rural region, crippling anxiety, and various family sagas, his dry wit and silly humor come to the fore. This includes coming to terms with the violent past that runs through the people of the Morton family and then witnessing his brother Toby being hospitalized for an addiction to ice.
It’s one thing to write. Another is to read terrible memories out loud, especially in a small space. Morton assumed that he would have no problem recording the audiobook because he had read the excerpts several times during the book tour. “However, the recording process has an intimate quality that surprised me. Sometimes I had to work really hard to keep my composure.
The passages in which he described his own struggles with mental health were particularly challenging. He writes, “Those were the darkest times of my life, and the wounds are still open,” adding that numerous smoke breaks were necessary.
His initial training as a writer was in a local newsroom, where he covered the town’s cake show and, at one point, reported on a 4.3kg papaya. As a little boy on the farm, Morton would open a cow’s bladder and play with it like a football. Morton, however, never felt at home on the field. He was studious, no-nonsense, unsportsmanlike, and worst of all, gay in a macho world.
