Rihanna and A$AP Rocky's 2 Kids: All About RZA and Riot

The couple — who have been together since 2020 — have two children: sons RZA, 2, and Riot.

Although the musicians were not actively planning to start a family when they got pregnant with their first child, Rihanna said Vogue that the two “certainly didn’t plan against it” either.

“I always thought it would be marriage first and then the baby, but who the hell says it has to be,” she told the tabloid in April 2022. “I’m certainly not going to let that come into the story the way I’m a mom.”

Less than a year later, the “Umbrella” singer posed for the cover British Vogue with Rocky and the then 9-month-old RZA. In a corresponding cover story, Rihanna called motherhood “legendary,” adding, “It is. You really don’t remember life before, it’s the craziest thing ever.”

Soon after, Rihanna revealed she was pregnant with her second child during the 2023 Super Bowl halftime performance. And after son Riot Rose was born in August 2023, a source told PEOPLE that “Rihanna feels her family is now complete.”

Aside from a few interviews, Rihanna and Rocky have kept details about their young sons under wraps. However, they posed for the first time as a family of four in September 2023.

Rocky has also been vocal about his desire to raise children with open minds and “not people who discriminate.” He explained that Dazed 2022, “And I’m not trying to describe a saint, but realistically, I just want a cool kid with cool parents.”

It’s also important to Rihanna to raise her children to feel connected to their roots, which is why she wanted both of her sons to have braided hair.

“This is a form of protection of our ancestors…[it] it makes us realize where we came from,” she said Vogue China in March 2024. “This is our lost history. I immediately wanted her to braid my children’s hair…it’s something in our blood.”

In June 2024, Rocky teamed up with Bottega Veneta for a special Father’s Day campaign called “Portraits of Fatherhood”. The rapper, who was born Rakim Mayer, modeled for the brand alongside RZA and Riot, who wore “best dad” T-shirts.

“This is me embodying and embracing fatherhood, parenthood, companionship and family, while still working on all aspects of my career,” he said in a statement. “It’s about what now completes my life: being present as a partner and parent.”

Rihanna and Rocky announced they are expecting their first child together in January 2022 after the couple were spotted out and about in New York with the singer’s baby bump in full view.

Less than five months later, they welcomed their son, RZA Athelston Mayers, on May 13, 2022.

“Rihanna is fine,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “They are very excited to be parents. Rihanna is already an amazing mom.”

However, it will be almost a year until the nickname of Rihanna and Rocky’s first son becomes public. RZA is named after Wu-Tang Clan leader, producer and rapper RZA (pronounced “Rizza”), whose real name is Robert Fitzgerald Diggs.

In his first year of life, RZA has made impressive milestones, like landing his number one spot British Vogue cover with mom and dad at only 9 months old. In the video, Rocky held RZA in his arms and kissed him on the forehead as Rihanna walked in front of them. In another photo, RZA sat on his mother’s lap as they both stared straight into the camera.

The singer also told the newspaper that the birth of RZA only brought her and Rocky closer. “We’re best friends with the baby,” Rihanna said. “We have to be on the same page, but we’ve always had that in our relationship. Everything changes when you have a kid, but I wouldn’t say it’s done anything, but it’s made us closer.”

Rihanna also hopes RZA will inherit her love of fashion, she says jokingly Vogue in April 2022 that she “will be in trouble” if he doesn’t. The fashion mogul’s older son even inspired Rihanna to consider creating children’s clothing for Fenty.

“You know, I always thought that doing things for kids would be a cliche and an obvious thing to do when you have a kid. It’s like, the obvious next step,” she told Party tonight in November 2022 “But when I went shopping, that’s when I realized, okay, maybe I need to start making things that I want my kids to wear because it’s hard! I have my own ideas.”

For RZA’s first birthday in 2023, Rocky celebrated the occasion on Instagram, sharing photos and videos of his son with the caption “WU TANG IZ 4 DA CHUREN 🤲” HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY TO MY 1ST BIRTHDAY. RZA❤️.”

In August 2023, RZA was given the title of “big brother” when Riot was born. He joined his family for an intimate photo shoot the following month, where the 16-month-old was pictured sitting on Rocky’s shoulders and holding his mother’s hand.

Rihanna and Rocky welcomed their second son, Riot, on August 1, 2023. According to his birth certificate, obtained by PEOPLE, the baby was born at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles at 7:41 a.m.

Riot made headlines long before he was born. Rihanna revealed she is expecting her second child during the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2023, where she debuted her growing baby bump on stage in a pretty red bodysuit.

After giving birth to Riot, an insider told PEOPLE that the “Diamonds” singer feels “complete.” The source shared, “Rihanna feels like her family is complete now,” and “it’s something she’s always wanted.”

Like his mother, father and brother before him, Riot is also named with an “R” (Rocky’s birth name is Rakim Mayers). Although Rihanna and Rocky didn’t share the meaning behind the moniker, the rapper released a single called “RIOT (Rowdy Pipe’n)” less than two weeks before Riot was born.

The caring parents shared the first photos of Riot in September 2023, but the little boy has changed a lot since then, according to his mom.

“Riot is actually already in all of RZA’s one-year-old clothes. He’s only 6 months old,” she told Interview magazine in April 2024.
