Riley Keough Ditches Red Hair, Debuts New Darker Locks at Virginia Film Festival

Riley Keough is turning to the dark side — hair color, that is.

On Thursday, Daisy Jones and six actress, 34, debuted her new black hair on her Instagram Story — a rare change for the actress who has often sported brown locks and even sported blonde hair at one point in the past.

Keough shared her updated look during an appearance at the Virginia Film Festival, pairing her new hairdo with a black and white striped Chanel top and tagging the fashion house and the event in her post.

The actress attended the film festival for her new film war pony, which according to IMDB is about two young Oglala Lakota men growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Keogh, who co-directed the film with Gina Gammell, shared a separate Instagram Story post showing her chatting on stage during a screening of the film at the festival.

The star — who is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and is also the eldest granddaughter of legendary singer Elvis Presley — has gone through multiple hair transformations over the years, most recently sporting red hair to play the lead rock star Daisy Jones in the Amazon Prime series Daisy Jones and six. In March, television and film hairstylist Maryann Hennings described to PEOPLE the work involved in the actress’s dramatic hairdo change.

“Color was very important in this particular project because of Daisy Jones. I needed something that gave her that confidence because she just mows them down,” Hennings said.

“We made Riley this bright red. She normally has dark hair, so I lightened it, put this bright red on top of it and then put a gloss over it that just made the whole thing sparkle,” she continued.

“And with her curls, that color made her a rock star. I felt like the wardrobe, that color and that long hair took her to a new level.”

The actress and director also recently sat down with vanity fair to discuss the highs and lows of her time in Hollywood, including her runway debut at the age of 14 when she sported dirty blonde hair.

“This is really cute,” Keough told the outlet when shown a picture of her walking for Dolce & Gabbana at Milan Fashion Week in 2004. “This was also really creepy.”

“I remember being really nervous, and I remember they played like, I think it was ‘Cream’ by Prince. It was a big moment for me as a 14-year-old,” she explained.

“My whole life has been pretty public, but I think this probably felt like the first time I was, like, doing something on my own, as opposed to a family thing.”

Keough also remarked that she likes “fashion” and “clothes,” as she was shown a photo of herself from this year’s Vanity Fair Oscar party.

“I love working with my hair and makeup team because they’re so wonderful and creative, but they’re also friends. It’s a very fun experience because you kind of hang out with your friends and then go out for a night.
