References to the making of the rings are mentioned by Gandalf to Frodo at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring, and Elrond recounts the story during the council of Rivendell. Sam even includes it in a song about the fall of the elven king Gil-galad, which he sings during the early stages of the hobbit’s journey.
McKay described it as “putting these clues together.” As they brainstormed possible plots on the whiteboard, they realized that a series set in Middle-earth leading up to the formation of the final alliance would have the epic emotional weight they were aiming for. McKay added, “There were these big themes about the fear of death, the temptation of evil, and even friendship. I remember saying, ‘It’s a show.'” Payne went on to emphasize, “Tolkien talked about not creating Middle-earth, rather than digging it up. We felt like we were uncovering things that already existed. People heard about it in montages and flashbacks, but these are huge untold stories.”
