Fans of the 1989 film by Patrick Swayze House on the road checking out the new Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake, but what about that sequel that came before?
House on the Road 2: Last Callwritten by and starring Johnathon Schaech, arrived in 2006 to extend Road House movie universe — without any talent from the original film.
Centered on Shane Tanner, the son of James Dalton who Swayze had killed in the meantime, the film replicates its predecessor’s story of a New Yorker who takes over the business of a Southern bar and eradicates its criminal underworld as a “cooler” (aka bouncer).
Schaech’s undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent Shane “tries to save his uncle’s (Will Patton) bar from a group of drug dealers intent on a takeover,” according to the synopsis.

Schaech, along with actors Jake Busey (son of Gary Busey) as Bill “Wild Bill” Decarie and Patton, “kick the action into high gear,” as House on road 2 the trailer teases. The story follows Shane’s attempts to manage Louisiana, at least the Black Pelican, inherited from his injured uncle, while solving his father’s murder. (Spoiler alert: Little does he know that the drug dealers and crime lords targeting Shane’s uncle are also responsible for Dalton’s off-screen death.)
“When I made House on the roadit should have been a remake,” Schaech, now 54, told Film International 2018. As with other direct-to-video creations of the time, he added, the powers-that-be “made a sequel” instead.
The film was helmed by director Scott Ziehl, whose filmography includes another sequel that bears little relation to the source material: 2004’s Cruel intentions 3.
During the 1990s and 2000s, distributor Sony Pictures Home Entertainment produced several direct-to-video sequels using familiarity with the original titles. This includes 2006 Hollow man 2 with Peter Facinelli and Christian Slater in the main roles and in 2005 Single White Female 2: The Psycho starring Kristen Miller.

As IndieWire’s Tony Maglio wrote House on road 2 earlier this month, “The only way Ziehl can even compete [director] Rowdy Herrington’s House on the road upped the ante dramatically, and he wasted exactly zero time on it” shortly into the sequel, which opens with “a montage of guns, hard drugs, alligators, butterfly knives and bags of money.”
Maglio joined the chorus of critics whose reviews after the film’s release in 2006 can mostly be classified as pans. Critic Scott Weinberg, writing for DVDTalk.com at the time, called the sequel’s “mindless, stupid mess” a “pretty silly 84-minute waste.” He added, however, that Schaech was a “not too shabby B-movie hero” and praised Hollman’s athleticism as a fighter.
According to ScreenRant, House on road 2 he was not always to represent any of the talent of his predecessor. The Impenetrable Screenwriting Podcast with Adam Ferrari that the film team approached Swayze about “the Obi-Wan Kenobi stuff in the bouncer world” and mentoring the younger main character.
Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year after the release House on road 2. The Dirty Dancing The star died at the age of 57 in 2009.
