At the college’s Wednesday graduating ceremony, Hale, the owner of Granite Telecommunications in Quincy, presented each undergraduate student a parting gift of $1,000—$500 for them to keep for themselves and $500 to give to someone else in need. Hale began the custom at Quincy College in 2021 and continued it at Roxbury Community College in 2022.

Hale claimed he had received numerous bits of advice from the graduates that he had learnt from his own “checkered history”: Don’t be frightened of failure, take risks, live as a leader, and “give a little more than you get.”

“I have witnessed failure up close,” he told the grads. It hurts. It aches. I wasn’t killed by it… Do not allow your fear to define you. Refuse it.

Before the graduates were about to cross the stage following speeches, songs, and processionals, Hale interrupted Chancellor Marcelo Suarez-Orozco to make an announcement about his gift, prompting a flurry of acclaim and chants. “Troubled times are here. You guys deserve to celebrate because you have thrived and survived, Hale added.

During her speech during the ceremony, Sen. Elizabeth Warren encouraged the kids to “rub it all over yourself, roll around in it, and enjoy every minute.”

You certainly have more obstacles to overcome than almost any graduating class in history. However, I’m here now to offer advice: Pick hope, she urged. I’m even here to tell you that I chose hope. That I really do have hope.

More than 3,646 students from UMass Boston received degrees in the Class of 2023, including 2,518 undergraduates, 998 graduate students, and 130 doctoral students. With an estimated net worth of $5 billion, Hale was recognised earlier this year by Forbes magazine as one of the top billionaires in the world. On a daily updated list, he was listed as the 550th richest person in the world as of Friday. He was listed in 999th place when he was named to the 2022 list.

In the fall of 2022, Hale was included to The Forbes 400 list. According to Hale, this happened as a result of the magazine featuring his Quincy College commencement address. His and his wife’s pledge to donate $1 million each week to regional NGOs dedicated to doing good on the South Shore and beyond was highlighted by Forbes last year. In October, Forbes published a cover article about the initiative.
