His father Bob was a doctor and his mother Carol was a teacher.

Career
Rob Niedermayer began his junior hockey career with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League in 1990. He has 24 goals and 26 assists this season. After the season, he had two seasons with the club, scoring 32 and 43 points. He was drafted by the Florida Panthers to the National Hockey League in 1993. He had 9 goals and 17 assists during the season. Then, in 1995, he set a career record with 82 goals and 26 assists in the NHL.
The Panthers, his club, reached the Stanley Cup finals that same year. The team, however, was beaten by the Colorado Avalanche. As a result of the concussion he received in the following years, he started playing as a defensive forward. He was a Panthers player until 2001. In exchange for Valeri Bure and Jason Wiemer, he was transferred to the Calgary Flames in 2001. That year he scored 57 goals for the team. The Flames traded him to the Mighty Ducks from Anaheim in 2003.
He was reassigned to the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. His club, along with his brother Scott, won the Stanley Cup that year. He also has 82 goals and 5 assists.
