Rob Schneider Says Adam Sandler Checks in on Him Every Week: ‘He’s a Special Cat’ (Exclusive)

Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler’s close friendship is still going strong after all these years.

While supporting Sandler at the premiere of his new Netflix comedy special in New York Adam Sandler: I love you on Tuesday, August 20, Schneider, 60, spoke to PEOPLE about how Murder mystery 2 star, 57, was his staunch friend.

“There hasn’t been a week in 30 years that he hasn’t checked on me. I mean, that’s true. No matter where I am in the world, I’ll get a phone call, sometimes in the middle of the night,” Schneider says. “He called me from Italy, [and said]’What are you doing?’ I say, it’s two in the morning. ‘So get up. I need to talk to you. Are you okay?’ ”

The pair, who first met in the 1980s while they were both working to become comedians, are also longtime on-screen collaborators. They first starred alongside each other in The boy from the water in 1998 and appeared together in more than a dozen other films.

Schneider praised Sandler for including him in so many of his big projects.

“We’ve been friends for five decades. He’s a special cat, and for him to even include me in all of this is just amazing,” Deadly wrong the actor tells PEOPLE. “I mean, really, I have no words to say except that I love him and I just want him to be healthy, happy, successful. He’s just amazing.”

When asked if he would join his longtime collaborator in the sequel to the 1996 golf comedy, Schneider teased, “We’ll see.”

As Schneider reflected on Sandler’s blossoming career, he tipped his hat to his friend’s success, saying, “He’s just getting started.”

“It’s wonderful. He works Hustle it was great, and Uncut gems is great. … He works with really, really talented people,” continues Schneider, who recently made headlines for his broken relationship with his daughter, Elle King.

“He has a new movie coming out with George Clooney for Netflix. It was a wonderful, great experience for him and a great thing for Netflix to bring the biggest movie star in the world there,” he adds, referring to Sandler’s ongoing partnership with the streaming platform.

At Thursday’s premiere, Sandler spoke enthusiastically to PEOPLE about making the long-awaited Happy Gilmore continuation.

“I’m beyond excited, probably the most excited I’ve been in years to record something,” he says. “We worked hard trying to write something that we thought people would have a good time with.”

Netflix confirmed on May 15 that Sandler is teaming up with the streamer for the sequel. Months later, during an appearance on August 20 Tonight’s showthe 50 first dates star revealed that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will be among the many athletes to star in the upcoming film.

“We didn’t want to let anyone down. People have been asking me for a long time, ‘Do it Happy Gilmore 2,’ and I was always like, ‘No, I’m just going to let you down,'” Sandler said at the time. ‘But then me and my friend Tim Herlihy came up with this idea, we’re really excited about it, we’ve written our asses off, we’re continuing to try to make a movie that you’re going to love and I think it’s – we’re excited. So many golfers are gracious and they’re going to be a part of it and all that.”
