Robert Downey Jr. Has No Plans to Slow Down After Winning an Oscar: More ‘Tricks Up My Sleeve’ (Exclusive)

Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr Oppenheimer was impressive, but he’s excited to show fans what’s next.

“I’ve got a few more tricks up my sleeve,” teases the actor, who stars in the upcoming HBO film Sympathizer, based on the 2015 bestseller by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The premiere of the miniseries is on April 14.

Downey — who slimmed down, shaved his head and changed the way he walked to portray it OppenheimerLewis Strauss’ scheming in the epic drama about the so-called father of the atomic bomb — goes even deeper in disguise in Sympathizer.

“It wasn’t particularly subtle, it didn’t need to be, but I’m already proud of what I saw,” says Downey, 58, who plays four different characters.

Downey and his wife and producing partner, Susan, spoke to PEOPLE at the Governor’s Ball after the show, shortly after the actor took the stage at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater to accept the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his work in the Christopher Nolan film, which he took won seven awards, including best film.

“We’re just getting started,” adds Susan, 50, of her plans with Downey, starting with Sympathizer, which Team Downey produced. The third and final season of their Emmy Award-winning Netflix fantasy series Sweet tooth will air later this year.

“We talk about it all the time,” she says. “There are still many things we want to do together and achieve together and play together, create together.”

Downey jokes that their collaboration is an “inside job,” adding, “In our own way, I believe we have mountains to climb.”

The actor clearly enjoys his partnership with his wife, with whom he has a son Exton (12) and a daughter Avri (9).

In his Oscar victory speech — which was sweet and salty and full of heart, like Downey himself — he toasted his family, including his three children (Downey is also father to Indio, 30, from a previous marriage) and his “vet, I think wife,” Susan.

“She found me a snarling rescue pet and brought love back into my life. That’s why I’m here,” he continued.

The couple met on a 2003 film Gothic styleafter Downey went through a rough patch, and he credits her for his second act, which included starring in two major franchises: Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the titular detective in Sherlock Holmes franchise.

But it was Oppenheimer which caught the attention of the Academy for the third time (he was previously nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 film Chaplinand Best Supporting Actor for an Actor with an Eccentric Method in 2008 A tropical thunderstorm.)

Friends like Jon Favreau, who directed Downey Iron man and Iron Man 2they are happy to see the actor getting love this awards season, which he swept.

“It’s nice to have the sun shining on him, because it’s changing,” says Favreau, 57. “You really get the sense that he’s putting things into perspective and he seems to understand what this moment means.”

Fellow MCU star Jeremy Renner agrees. “He’s doing good, man. He has tons of energy and his beautiful wife is by his side,” says the the Avengers star, 53. “He’s having a really good time. I’m so, so proud of him.”
