In his initial days, he represented Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and picked up crucial wickets for the team. He also represented East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. He chose Bangladesh because Mumbai had a strong batting line-up and it would be difficult for him to cement his place in the team. However, in Bengal, there are a lot of openings for the batsmen. He also represented East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. In 2001-02, he was selected as the captain of the Bengal team, but it did not work out. In 2003, he scored 139 runs in an Indian A-League tour match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and led the team to victory by 7 wickets. His performance in domestic cricket led to his selection in the Indian team for the triangular series in Australia in January 2004, replacing the injured Mohammad Kaif. He expressed his joy after the selection, saying:
“I couldn’t stop smiling for three days.”
In his first game, he scored just two runs but took a vital wicket off Andrew Symonds.
On January 24, 2004, he scored his highest score of 54 points against Zimbabwe, the only 50-point score in his national team career.
Later, he was canceled from his tour of Pakistan. He was selected again in the Video Cup and England tour, but was ineffective with both bat and ball. In 2007, he represented Kolkata Tigers in the Indian Cricket League (ICL), but the league was later declared unauthorized by the BCCI. Soon, he along with 70 other players were granted amnesty by the BCCI in 2009. After returning to domestic cricket, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders for the third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His last first-class appearance was in 2009, but he retired on February 9, 20212. After retiring, he joined the commentary team with his father. He worked as a commentator during the 2013 IPL season and presented on Star Sports’ Star Power show. In 2017, he became the media director of the Port Elizabeth franchise.
