All about Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara’s Son River

Mara and Phoenix, 49 — who got privately engaged in 2019 after first meeting in 2012 on the set of the sci-fi drama Her – they are already parents to a son, Rivero, who was born in 2020.

Their son is named in honor of Phoenix’s older brother, who died at the age of 23 on October 31, 1993, of an overdose. He acted in films including Stand by me, Running on empty and My private Idaho.

The news of Mara and Phoenix’s baby was revealed by Victor Kossakovsky, a Russian filmmaker who previously worked with Phoenix on a documentary Goon, at the Zurich Film Festival. “He just had a baby,” Kossakovsky said in September 2020. “A beautiful son named River.”

Neither Mara nor Phoenix publicly acknowledged the pregnancy when the couple made rare red carpet appearances earlier that year, at the Golden Globes in January 2020 and the Oscars a month later.

Although Mara and Phoenix are very private about their relationship and parenting, Mara revealed that becoming a mother to Rivera “opened her heart” as she celebrated her first Mother’s Day in May 2021.

“As a new mom, Mother’s Day took on a special meaning this year. Raising our baby, River, opened my heart to a whole new life filled with hope and more determination than ever to create a kinder and more sustainable world,” the actress wrote at the time in a candid letter written for Farm Sanctuary’s Mother’s Day campaign, which was shared with PEOPLE.

Years later, while appearing on Start left podcast, Mara spoke candidly about raising her son with Phoenix.

“I feel like a creative household, we talk about creative things all the time,” she said. “It doesn’t feel like a two-actor house because I didn’t work for the first three and a half years that we were together. Basically, since we’ve been together, I’ve only done one or two times and one is really small and short.”
