Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale’s love story began in 2012 after meeting through mutual friends.

However, despite their very public careers, the Australian actress and New Jersey native prefer to keep their romance out of the spotlight.

“I think, [press is] it’s not something we do all the time, but we try to go with the flow,” Byrne said vanity fair in a 2019 interview about their relationship. “We’re generally pretty private.”

They welcomed their first son, Rocco, in February 2016, and their second son, Rafael, in November 2017. The parents also credit their differences for making their relationship work so well.

“We can’t be from different parts of the world, you know?” Byrne said in a 2017 interview In style. “When something is special, it’s hard to articulate, but I feel really lucky.” She later told Vulture that she was “a little more moment-to-moment” than Cannavale, whom the magazine described as “the planner in the family.”

The pair first met in the fall of 2012, while Byrne was wrapping up five seasons of the legal drama Indemnity.

“The chemistry between them, it’s just amazing. They’re both kind of universally loved,” Glenn Close, Byrne’s Indemnity costar, said vanity fair.

In December 2012, the new couple was spotted holding hands at the season opener party Portlandia at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

At the time, Byrne’s rep had no comment on whether or not the couple was dating.

June 3, 2013: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale make their red carpet debut

August 6, 2013: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale go on a double date with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

In August 2013, Byrne and Cannavale went on a double date with then-couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. They dined at Hinoki & the Bird in Los Angeles, where the foursome shared oysters, wine and a few other signature dishes.

“They were very nice and warm,” an onlooker told PEOPLE. “They seemed to be having fun on a double date, and Jen told the server that she would definitely be back.”

2014: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale star in two films

The couple starred together twice in 2014. They both starred in Annie and Adult beginners.

June 4, 2015: Rose Byrne says working with Bobby Cannavale is “very intense”

In 2015, Byrne revealed her thoughts on her close collaboration with Cannavale during a promotion Spyin which they both starred.

“[Acting together] is a very intense thing that you can experience together,” Byrne told PEOPLE. “It’s not for everyone, but I think he’s such a great actor.”

October 2015: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale are expecting their first child

In October 2015, it was revealed that Byrne and Cannavale were expecting their first child together. The actress was spotted with a growing baby bump at Los Angeles International Airport that month.

February 1, 2016: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale welcomed their first baby

During the performance at The Late Show with Stephen ColbertCannavale revealed that he and Byrne welcomed a son, Rocco Robin, on February 1, 2016.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Cannavale revealed the meaning behind the name Rocco.

“We just like the name,” he said Boardwalk Empire said the actor. “His middle name is [Byrne’s] Dad’s name, Robin, and we loved how they sounded together.”

November 2016: Rose Byrne was spotted wearing a diamond ring

In November 2016, Byrne was seen in Australia wearing a ring on her ring finger, sparking rumors that the couple were engaged. The ring appeared to be white gold with a halo of diamonds. The couple’s representatives did not comment on a possible engagement at the time.

August 2017: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale are expecting their second child

Byrne confirmed her second pregnancy in an interview with Australia’s Jones magazine in August 2017.

“I’m a little tired, but I feel good,” she told the newspaper. “Everyone was really sweet on set today, and you always get a little more attention when you’re pregnant, which is fantastic.”

November 2017: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale welcomed their second child

In November, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple welcomed their second son, Rafael Cannavale.

Cannavale later revealed the origin of his son’s name. “I haven’t given one of my kids a Latin name yet, so I wanted to honor my mom’s side of the family,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “And, you know, Rafael Nadal had such a great year and we were following him all the time and watching all his matches and we were like, ‘What about Rafa? That’s going well with Rocco.’ And that was it.”

The actor is also the father of a son, Jake, from a previous relationship.

November 2018: Rose Byrne says she is “learning on the job” how to be a mum

In 2018, Byrne told PEOPLE that adjusting to motherhood has a “learning curve.”

“Every day, every hour, I ask myself, ‘What’s going on?’ I’m learning on the job,” she said. “I have no business telling anyone what to do. Being a mother changes everything. I feel like it affects everything I do, especially for a job like this.”

October 31, 2019: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale take their kids trick-or-treating

For Halloween 2019, the couple took their sons Rocco and Rafa trick-or-treating around their Brooklyn neighborhood.

“Happy Halloween from the cast Coco!” Cannavale wrote on Instagram.

January 7, 2020: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale reveal they’re going to bed early

In an interview with Stephen Colbert, the couple said they enjoy an early night.

“We go to bed pretty early, it’s very stupid,” Byrne replied when Colbert asked him about the dumbest thing about the two of them. When Colbert asked how early, Cannavale said, “About 9:45.”

“It’s not a crime to go to bed that early,” added Byrne.

In 2020, Byrne and Cannavale revealed that they call each other “husband and wife” even though they are not married.

“I hate all the other words! It’s just easier to say ‘husband and wife,'” Cannavale said Sup. “‘Boyfriend and Girlfriend’ feels so young. ‘Partner’ feels so sterile.”

“What else could we say?” he asked Byrne before jokingly replying, “My lover!”

“Of course,” she replied. “My lover, Bobby.”

“Who cares?!” Cannavale added. “It’s funny that people are interested.”

April 2020: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale in quarantine together

During the first shutdown due to COVID-19 in early 2020, Byrne appeared on Diversity‘with Big ticket podcast, talking about how she and Cannavale spent their time while staying home.

“Only alcohol”, the bridesmaids the star joked. “Drugs. Pornography.”

“Listen, I feel happy,” she continued. “We’re safe and we’re fine, but it’s scary. We have two young children. We’ve only just been in, but I have friends who work in the health system.”

March 2021: Rose Byrne says Bobby Cannavale was the first person she called

During the episode In style‘with Ladies First with Laura BrownByrne revealed that Cannavale is her go-to when it comes to making important phone calls.

“Oh, Bobby, I’m calling Bobby,” she said. “[I can’t call him now] he is always there. We’re always together,” she continued, referring to stay-at-home orders in the event of COVID-19.

July 16, 2021: Rose Byrne opens up about what’s stopping her and Bobby Cannavale from getting married

Talking to Sydney Morning Herald in July 2021, Byrne said other life events on the road have postponed any potential nuptials.

“I keep going, ‘Let’s get on it, let’s do it,'” Byrne said. “And then, you know, you have a kid, and then, oh, there’s another kid. It was kind of like that for us. I love weddings and knowing people [for whom] it’s an important thing and I totally respect that. I guess it’s just like that for us, we haven’t done it, we’ll do it, then — no! Pandemic.”

The pair appeared at the SXSW 2022 conference and festival in Austin, Texas to promote their film Seriously Redwhich debuts in November 2022. Byrne and Cannavale posed for photos at the PEOPLE Portrait Studio as well as on the red carpet with the rest of the film’s cast.

September 2022: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale announce a new project

In September 2022. Diversity reported that Byrne and Cannavale are set to star opposite Robert De Niro in an upcoming road trip comedy Inappropriate behavior. The real-life couple play ex-spouses in the film, while De Niro serves as Cannavale’s father.

May 13, 2024: Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale star Ezra

Byrne and Cannavale star alongside each other Ezra — previously titled Inappropriate behavior. The pair play a divorced couple trying to parent their 11-year-old son Ezra, who has autism.

“I haven’t posted in years. I’m really proud of this movie,” Cannavale wrote on Instagram.
