Royal Caribbean Confirms Death of Passenger on 9-Month World Cruise

A passenger on a nine-month Royal Caribbean cruise has died, PEOPLE can confirm.

Rumors of the death of Serenade of the sea started after popular creator Adita, who goes by the name @aditaml2759 and is traveling on the Ultimate World Cruise, said the trip “had its first death” in a TikTok posted on Sunday.

“Sad news,” she said after announcing that the ship had arrived in Los Angeles. “We had our first death on the Ultimate World Cruise. A woman passed away last night. She was an elderly lady, and the reason I know is because I was coming to my room when they were taking the body out.” Adita said it was something “very, very sad” to witness.

“I think it was probably a heart attack. But I don’t have much news except that an elderly patient or guest passed away,” she continued.

Responding to the comments, Adita wrote that the deceased person “was a solo guest, so she passed alone in her room.” While the cruise line would not comment on the circumstances of the death, they did confirm that one of its passengers had died in a statement to PEOPLE.

“The guest sails on the ship Serenade of the sea unfortunately passed away. At this moment, we are actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s relatives. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have nothing more to share at this time,” the statement said.

The 160-destination trip left Miami on December 10, 2023 and traveled through several parts of the Americas, including Brazil, Argentina and Peru, on its first leg. It began its Asia-Pacific journey on Sunday and will continue to the Middle East, Mediterranean and Europe until September 10.

On Friday, Royal Caribbean told PEOPLE that there may be adjustments to the itinerary due to the ongoing unrest in the Red Sea and Suez Canal.
