But those watching at home branded their efforts ‘clumsy’ and questioned why they were singled out for such an honour.

One person raged: “Well, Alan Carr and Amanda Holden are absolutely awful. This opening is so awkward.”

Another said: “We’ve hit rock bottom. I see @ITV with #RoyalVarietyPerformance Carr and Holden??? It’s just not funny. Why are they introducing themselves.”

While a third asked, “How painful is this?”

Alan began by poking fun at Amanda’s typically daring outfits, telling her: “You look fantastic, just on the right side of the Ofcom complaint.”

He continued: “I feel very comfortable and safe sharing the stage with you, so it’s a high profile event and if Just Stop Oil comes on stage, I can use you as my human shield.”

Amanda joked, “Well, good luck to them because I’ll end up being their first victim to end up less orange.”

As they continued, Alan mused, “I think the main reason they chose us to host tonight is because we tick two big boxes. I’m gay and your . . .”

Acting shocked, Amanda asked him, “Old?”

He replied: “I was going to say woman, but now you mention it, you are very old.”

Amanda shot back, “I’m only five years older than you.”

But he told her: “That’s the thing, I work in the gay years. Five years is actually 35 years, actually in our world, I’m afraid I’ve got bad news for you – you’ve just lost your winter heating allowance.”

The filming took place back in November at the Royal Albert Hall in London in the presence of King Charles.

Queen Camilla was unable to attend after falling ill.
