Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’ Kids: Everything They’ve Said About Parenting

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are raising two girls.

The couple — who have been together since 2011 — first met on set A place behind the pines and since then they have had two children: daughters Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 7.

After playing a fake family with Mendes in the 2012 film, Gosling realized he wanted to start his own family with the actress. “I didn’t think about children before I met her, but after I met Eva, I realized that I just didn’t want to have children without her,” Notebook said the star GQ 2023, adding, “and there were moments A place behind the pines where we pretended to be a family, and I really didn’t want to pretend anymore.”

Gosling and Mendes remain fairly tight-lipped about their personal lives, especially regarding their daughters.

“I’ve always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids. I’ll talk about them, of course, with limitations, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life,” Mendes wrote on Instagram in 2020. “Because my kids are still so young and don’t understand what posting their picture really means, I don’t have their consent. And I won’t post their picture until they are old enough to give me consent.”

In the Gosling household, Esmeralda and Amada do not have access to the Internet.

“It’s too dangerous,” he said Out of time the star wrote on Instagram in response to a follower. “Just like kids aren’t allowed to drink, vote or get a driver’s license (etc.), the internet falls into that category for me. Especially social media.”

In July 2023, Gosling revealed to PEOPLE that his children helped him prepare for the role of Ken in the Greta Gerwig film Barbie. He explained that he didn’t play with dolls when he was young, so his children “were my introduction to [Barbie].”

However, it seems his daughters weren’t too impressed with his performance in the film. “I think they’re confused as to why I would want to play Ken. They have no use for Ken,” he said.

In August 2023, a source told PEOPLE that Gosling and Mendes are “working parents who have little help.” The insider added: “When they’re not working, they’re all about their girlfriends.”

Gosling reiterated this while talking to Diversity in February 2024.

“It’s going super fast. I can hear the clock ticking,” he said, referring to time with his daughters. “I don’t know how much time I’ll get and I don’t want to spend it in the wrong place. I know I’m not spending it in the wrong place if I’m with my family.”

Here’s what Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes had to say about their two daughters.

Gosling and Mendes’ first child, Esmeralda Amado, was born in Santa Monica, California on September 12, 2014. The couple kept the news of the pregnancy under wraps for as long as possible, with a source telling PEOPLE that Mendes “just didn’t ever want anyone outside of her close friends and family he knows more than he had to. And Ryan is certainly private and always has been.”

When Esmeralda was born, it was love at first sight for the new parents. “Ryan is madly in love with the baby,” an insider told PEOPLE at the time. “[Mendes is] absolutely in heaven to be a mom. She’s never been happier… She and Ryan are thrilled with this beautiful person they’ve created. This is a really special time for them.”

Mendes also temporarily stepped away from acting to become a stay-at-home mom, a role she described as “much harder” than her acting career. “People are so sweet – they really try to warn you, prepare you when you’re pregnant, but nobody can prepare you. Nobody,” she said.

While Mendes took a break to focus on family, Gosling still went to work — and it paid off. A few years after becoming a father, Gosling won a Golden Globe for his performance in La la country and he thanked his partner and daughters in his speech.

“While I was singing, dancing and playing the piano … my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second child and trying to help her brother fight cancer,” he said. “Honey, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, I love you.” The actor then dedicated his award to the memory of Mendes’ older brother, Juan Carlos Mendes, who passed away last April.

Since becoming parents, Mendes and Gosling have occasionally spoken publicly about their family — and Mendes has even publicly praised Esmeralda’s creativity.

“My five-year-old cut off her socks, part of her foot, and she likes to wear her socks as sleeves,” she said in 2020. “And the other day she wore her underwear as a hat, and I was like, ‘That’s amazing.’ I wish I could do that. I can’t.”

It was only a month before Mendes gave birth to her second child that the public heard that she was expecting. Mendes and Gosling welcomed their second daughter, Amada Lee, on April 29, 2016.

Amada was named after Mendes’ grandmother; the nickname also means “beloved” in Spanish.

According to Mendes, she and Gosling have the same parenting style: “controlling.”

“I think it’s an expression – we always laugh at those expressions – I think we would be ‘bulldozer parents,'” she said when Amada was 3 years old. “We have to be on top of them every second… The stakes are really high, so yeah, I’m a helicopter parent. And then I heard a bulldozer and I was like, ‘Ooh, yeah, I’m probably a bulldozer parent.’ ”

Mendes also said she finds her children “inspirational” because of their freedom and creativity. “They’ll just say, ‘Can I wear socks on my hands today?’ ” she told PEOPLE in 2019. “And I said, ‘Yeah, of course you can wear socks today.’ So we do.”

“Or he’ll get a Halloween costume that we’re hanging out with and he’ll wear it with pajama pants and a headband, and it’s so cool,” she added. – It is simply such freedom.

Both Gosling’s and Mendes’ daughters were young when the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, and keeping the girls at home in quarantine was a challenge they shared with parents everywhere.

“Trying to keep things light at home with my two little ones,” she captioned the vinyl record video. “Nothing better than old Cuban music. And yes, that’s my three-year-old [Amada] on the piano. I think she thinks the music is coming from her. And I won’t correct her.”

A few months later, Mendes shared a hilarious selfie, showing off a colorful new makeup look thanks to her two daughters. “They won ❤️,” she captioned the photo, which features neon blue eyeshadow, purple lipstick and green and black scribbles on her forehead.

Mendes has been vocal about fostering creativity and giving her children artistic freedom, telling Byrdie in 2022, “I really feel like when we’re bored — we’re not stimulated by our phone, iPad, computer or television — that’s when the ideas come. Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes it’s dangerous , and sometimes instructive. I really want it to be the summer of boredom.”
