Ryan Gosling Asked Angela Bassett for Her Autograph After Seeing What's Love Got to Do with It at Age 13

Ryan Gosling has been a fan of Angela Bassett for 30 years and counting!

The Fall Guy The actor, 43, took part in a round of questioning during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday, May 9, when the host asked him if he had ever asked anyone famous for an autograph.

“The first person I asked was [professional wrestler] The Ultimate Warrior, and he said no,” Gosling said. “But the second person I asked — the first person who gave it to me — was Mrs. Angela Bassett.”

“I was 13 years old. I just saw What does love have to do with it,” he recalled of the 1993 film in which Bassett, 65, played Tina Turner — a performance that earned the actress her first Oscar nomination.

“It was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen, and it still is,” Gosling told Stephen Colbert.

Gosling said the autograph came about when he ran into Bassett at an AMC theater, where she was with actor/comedian Sinbad.

“I don’t know if they were with one another; I don’t know. They talked,” he said.

The Barbie the actor concluded by saying that the “last person” he got an autograph from was actor and comedian Jim J. Bullock, for longtime partner Eva Mendes.

“She’s a big fan of Jim J. Bullock,” he said.

And the sweet support between Gosling and Mendes, 50, goes both ways. Earlier this month, the actress and mother of two – who shares daughters Esmeralda, 9, and Amada, 8, with Gosling – mentioned The Fall Guy on Instagram, posting a side-by-side pair of gold-clad couples in a humorous reference to his stuntman character in the film.

In the post, a shot of Gosling from the film dressed as Colt Seavers was paired with a photo of Mendes posing for his recent photo shoot with PEOPLE in a gold look to match.

“Do you believe in happy endings?” she wrote. “Aliana and Space Cowboy finally together.”

IN The Fall GuyGosling plays the stunt double for a Space Cowboy character (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who has a romance with an alien named Aliana in the fictional film directed by Emily Blunt’s character.

In her post, Mendes playfully referred to herself and Gosling as two characters. “If you know, you know… ❤️,” the actress added in her post while tagging the film.

The Fall Guy now playing in cinemas.
