Ryan Lochte scandal: The Olympic Committee suspended him
Ryan Lochte has been suspended for 10 months by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Swimming. The sentence was imposed for lying about a robbery at gunpoint at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The move was announced on September 8, 2016, and USA Swimming outlined the consequences with a 10-month ban (until June 30, 2017).
According to the announcement, Lochte has been banned from all domestic and international competition and will no longer receive a monthly stipend from USA Swimming or the USOC. Similarly, he would have no direct assistance or access to the USOC’s training facilities. He would also have to forfeit any USA Swimming and USOC medal funds for his 2016 Olympic gold medal. In addition, Lochte would have to perform 20 hours of community service and would be barred from participating in Team USA’s White House visit and to USA Swimming’s 2016 annual “Golden Glasses” celebration.
Besides him, Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were also convicted. after the matter became a worldwide spectacle, the American athlete tweeted an apology on August 19 of that year, five days after the accusation. After the event, popularly known as “Lochtegate”, he said that he was “changed” or “drunk” at the time of the event and that he “exaggerated the story”.
Ryan Lochte lied about the robbery in Rio de Janeiro.
The then 32-year-old said he, Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi on their way home from a party. Lochte spoke with NBC’s Today about the evening’s events. According to the Associated Press, Lochte said their group was pulled back and three men with police badges arrived.
They only had a badge and no lights or other things. The suspected thieves pulled out their guns after being stopped and directed the other athletes to get on the ground. While the others agreed, he refused because he felt they had done nothing wrong. Then one of the men took out his rifle and pointed it at Lochte’s forehead. Then he sat down and raised his hands. “He [the mugger] he took our money, my wallet — he left my cell phone, he left my credentials,” Lochte said.
Shortly after the interview, however, Brazilian police admitted the story was fake. “No robbery was committed against these athletes.” “They were not the victims of what they claimed,” civil police chief Fernando Veloso said during a press conference. According to Velos, CCTV video shows one swimmer tearing the sign from the wall and throwing it to the ground. According to the AP, Bentz and Conger informed Brazilian authorities that Lochte’s explanation was false. Two security guards brandished firearms at the swimmers during the competition. Veloso would not confirm the report, but said the stewards’ actions were justified because the players were “behaving violently.”
