Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Are ‘Electric’, Says Deadpool 3 Director Shawn Levy (Exclusive)

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are a match made in Marvel movie heaven!

On Sunday, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, 55, told PEOPLE that the actors are “electric” on screen together as he teased what fans can expect from the upcoming sequel at the 76th annual DGA Awards in Los Angeles.

“I knew they were professionals. I knew they were the sweetest gentlemen, but when you see them as Deadpool and Wolverine, something electric happens,” said Levy of Reynolds and Jackman, who star opposite each other in the highly anticipated film.

“And you’re in the presence of icons, and even as their good friend, that gave me a thrill for days,” he continued, adding of the trio’s friendship, “Hugh, Ryan and I are really good friends in real life. We spend a lot of time together in real life.”

Reynolds, 47, and Jackman, 55, return as superheroes Deadpool and Wolverine in the third Dead pool movie, which will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.

The film marks the series’ first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after Disney bought the rights to the characters from 20th Century Fox.

Levy, who previously directed PG films Big fat liar and Dozens cheaperadded that it was a “fun” experience putting together an R-rated project like Deadpool & Wolverinee.

“It corrupted my soul in ways that may be irrevocable,” he joked. “I often joke to Ryan that I was a sweet Canadian boy who didn’t do blue… now I’m riffing on R-rated content alongside the best in the business. So it’s definitely fun.”

During Super Bowl Sunday, the teaser trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine has been announced, promising a fun and action-packed ride with Reynolds and Jackman as they return to their iconic superhero characters.

“Welcome to Mercury Retrograde of the Marvel phases. #DeadpoolWolverine,” Reynolds wrote on Instagram when he released the trailer.

The Welcome to Wrexham star previously marked the end of filming on the sequel on January 24th in a post on Instagram, writing: “The suit hides blood. Also sweat… But today, with the Deadpool cover, it’s mostly tears. A huge and forever thank you to the cast and crew of our film who battled wind, rain, strikes and @thehughjackman… all under the steadfast guidance of @slevydirect.”

“I got to make a movie with my closest friends, and that doesn’t happen often,” he added.
